Knitting Pattern: Hummingbird Hat

Hummingbird Hat, free knitting pattern by Underground Crafter in Lion Brand HeartlandI’m so excited to be sharing the first pattern in the Hummingbird Hat and Baby Bird Blanket Knit-a-Long. The Hummingbird Hat uses a simple, stretchy stitch pattern to create a comfortable hat that can adjust for hair growth. The stitch pattern can be worked flat or in the round, so you get to choose how to make your Hummingbird Hat – flat and seamed or seamless in the round. The Hummingbird Hat knitting pattern is available in 12 sizes from 2-Lb. Preemie through Adult Large.

Last week, I shared a sneak peak of the 4-Lb. Preemie size of the Hummingbird Hat, so I thought today I’d share a sneak peak of the next pattern in this knit-a-long, the Baby Bird Blanket.

Hummingbird Hat and Baby Bird Blanket, free knitting patterns by Underground Crafter in Lion Brand HeartlandThe stitch pattern that I’m calling the Hummingbird Stitch is the foundation of both patterns. It’s super stretchy, like ribbing, but it has a more intricate look.

This hat is knit from the bottom up, so it decreases as you get towards the crown. If you’re new to decreasing in knitting, I’ve linked up four video tutorials to help you.

Hummingbird Hat, free knitting pattern by Underground Crafter in Lion Brand HeartlandAnd, speaking of videos, I made a short preview video so you can see how the hat fits.

If you’re making a hat to donate to Knots of Love, be sure to read through their guidelines and follow their donation instructions for best results. I used Lion Brand Heartland yarn, one of my favorite yarns. It’s an ultra soft, easy care yarn available in stunning colors, and it’s on Knots of Love’s required yarn list.

  1. Thank you for the beautiful pattern my sister and I knit and crochet for Charity in our area. There are a great need everywhere. We both are retired but still have trouble finding time to do all we want to do..

  2. My sister knits hats for premature babies, and this is what I am going to do also. I doubt that I will ever be able to do the numbers she hands in the local hospitals-usually 100 at a time! Thanks so much for this pattern Sandra
