The Bulky Faux Mistake Rib Hat is the bulky weight version of my Faux Mistake Rib Watchman’s Cap pattern. It’s a stretchy, knit-look beanie that can be worn with a rolled brim, or an unrolled brim like a stocking cap. It’s stretchy enough to fit most teens and adults.

My dad really liked the yarn I used for the Garter Rib Beanie, so I was determined to make him something using the same colorway in Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn. When I make crochet gifts for men, I try to be as “unfussy” as possible with stitches and styles. I know that my dad usually wears his hats more like stocking caps with the brim unrolled…

…but I knew that some men prefer a rolled brim, so they can wear the hat more like a beanie.

Once I finished the hat, I was inspired to make a coordinating scarf. Since I already have a Bulky Faux Mistake Rib Scarf pattern, I decided to use a slightly different stitch for the Pebble Rib Scarf. That pattern will be available for free tomorrow, so be sure to stop by so you can make the whole set.

I actually made this set for my dad for a winter holiday gift last year, but I didn’t publish the pattern until today. I figured the combination of Christmas in July and his birthday made the timing just right.

Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

This knit-look, unisex watchman’s cap can be worn with a rolled or unrolled brim. It’s stretchy enough to fit most teens and adults. It’s designed to coordinate with the Pebble Rib Scarf (shown in the pictures) or the Bulky Faux Mistake Rib Scarf. A medium weight version, the Faux Mistake Rib Watchman’s Cap, is available here in 8 sizes.

Finished Size

Hat: 20” (51 cm) circumference x 10” (25.5) height.

Materials

Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn (72% cotton/28% nylon, 8.8 oz/250 g/317 yd/290 m) – 1 skein in 11019 Pebble Beach, or approximately 240 yd (219.5 m) in any bulky weight cotton blend yarn.
US Size K-10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
Yarn needle.
Clover Quick Locking Stitch Marker Set.

Gauge

17 sts x 12 rows = 4” (10 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

BL – back loop only
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
rep – repeat
Rnd(s) – Round(s)
sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together – [Insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. New Stitch A Day has a helpful video tutorial for this stitch here.

Pattern Notes

This watchman’s cap is crocheted flat along the length of the hat, then seamed and finished with crown decreases in the round.
A tutorial for joining with a slip stitch seam is available here.
Stitch pattern is reversible. Choose preferred side as right (front) side.
Move stitch marker up each Round to mark last stitch.

Pattern Instructions

Hat

Brim to crown

Ch 40.
Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, *hdcBL in next ch, slstBL in next ch; rep from * across to last 2 chs, slstBL in last 2 chs. (39 sts)
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, slstBL in first 3 sts, *hdcBL in next st, slstBL in next st; rep from * across.
Row 3: Turn, ch 1, *hdcBL in next st, slstBL in next st; rep from * across to last 3 sts, hdcBL in next st, slstBL in next 2 sts.
Rep Rows 2-3 until hat measures approximately 20 (51 cm) across rows. Rep Row 2 once more.

Seam hat

With right/front side facing and wrong/inside of hat together (see Pattern Notes), work sl st seam (see Pattern Notes) up to short edge (crown), being careful to match stitches on each side of hat.

Shape crown

Rnd 1: Work 32 sl sts – or, any multiple of 4 sts – evenly around short edge of hat (crown). Do not join, place marker in last st (see Pattern Notes), and begin working in the round. (32 sts)
Rnd 2: Sc2tog around. (16 sts)
Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2. Fasten off with long yarn tail. (8 sts)

Finishing

Thread yarn needle with yarn tail and sew remaining sts together on crown. Weave ends into wrong side of hat.
