Floral Granny Square Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

Invite the vibrant colors and textures of spring into your home with this floral granny square.

Finished Size

  • Motif: 12” (30.5 cm) square.

Materials

  • Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz/100 g/170 yd/156 m) – 1 skein each in 139 Rose Shocking (CA) and 105 Silver Blue (CB), or approximately 55 yd (50.5 m) in CA and 95 yd (87 m) in CB in any medium weight yarn.
  • US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Motif = 12” (30.5 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Lion Brand has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • cdc – crossed double crochet – Skip st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st. Each cdc counts as 2 sts. A video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – [Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. A helpful photo tutorial for this stitch is available here.
  • dtr – double treble crochet
  • FPdc – front post double crochet – Yo, insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops) twice. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available here.
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • tr – treble crochet
  • yo – yarn over
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
  • () Work instructions between parentheses into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • Ch 1 at beginning of Rounds and sl st joins do not count as a stitches.

Motif

  • With CA, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 1, 16 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of first dc. (16 sts)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 1, starting in same st [FPdc around next st, 3 dc in next st] around, join with sl st to top of first dc. (32 sts)
  • Rnd 3: Ch 1, starting in same st [FPdc around next FPdc, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st] 8 times, join with sl st to top of first dc. (40 sts)
  • Rnd 4: Ch 1, starting in same st [FPdc around next FPdc, dc in next 2 sts, (starting in same st and continuing to next st, dc2tog), dc in same st, dc in next st] 8 times, join with sl st to top of first dc. (48 sts)
  • Rnd 5: Ch 1, starting in same st [FPdc around next FPdc, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] 8 times, join with sl st to top of first dc. (56 sts)
  • Rnd 6: Sl st in next 2 sts, ch 1, starting in same st [sc in next st, 3 dc in each of next 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 1 st, sl st in next st, skip 1 st] 8 times, join with sl st to top of first sc. (72 sts)
  • Rnd 7: Working behind petals from previous Rnds, [ch 8, sl st to next sl st at FPdc] 7 times, ch 8, sl st to first ch-8 sp. (8 ch-8 sp)
  • Rnd 8: Ch 1, 11 sc in each ch-8 sp around, join CB with sl st to top of first sc. Fasten off CA. (88 sts)
  • Rnd 9: Ch 1, dc in same st, *dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 9 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in next st; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, dc in first st, ch 1, join with sc (counts as ch 1) to top of first sc. (23 sts on each side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 10: Ch 1, 2 tr in same ch-2 sp, *5 cdc across next 10 sts, dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next, 5 cdc across next 10 sts,** (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, 2 tr in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as ch 1) to top of first tr. (27 sts on each side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 11: Ch 1, dc in same ch-2 sp, *6 cdc across next 12 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st, dtr in skipped st on Rnd 9, ch 1, skip 1 st, 6 cdc across next 12 sts,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as ch 1) to top of first tr. (29 sts on each side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 12: Ch 1, 2 sc in same ch-2 sp, *scBL in next 13 sts, sc in ch-1 sp, scBL in next st, sc in next ch-1 sp, scBL in next 13 sts,** (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, 2 sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as ch 1) to top of first sc. (33 sts on each side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 13: Ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *[skip 1 st, 3 dc in next st, skip 1 st] 11 times,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as ch 1) to top of first dc. (37 sts on each side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, *scBL in next 37 sts,** (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with hdc (counts as 2 ch) to top of first sc. (39 sts on each side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • If your square is smaller than 12” (30.5 cm) after Rnd 14, work additional rounds as follows until square reaches 12” (30.5 cm):Ch 1, sc in same ch-3 sp, *sc in each st across to corner ch-3 sp,** (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-3 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, sc in first ch-3 sp, ch 1, join with hdc (counts as 2 ch) to top of first sc. (Increases by 2 sts on each side with each rep)
  • Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 36”/91.5 cm) for seaming.
