I’m so excited to kick off the second Summer Quickies Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet with Liliana, an easy peasy crochet ladybug pattern! Liliana Ladybug is easy to adapt by adding more or fewer spots, and you can make one in an afternoon for a last-minute gift or road-trip companion.

Ladybugs remind me of summer, and they have been used in New York City for years to ward off other insects. Each one seems (to my eyes) to have a unique spotting pattern.

Body

  • Rnd 11: Sc in each st around.
  • Rnds 12-16: Rep Rnd 11, 5 more times.
  • Remove marker, fasten off CA with long yarn tail, approximately 18”/45.5 cm, for seaming.

Head

  • With CB, work as for Bottom through Rnd 4.
  • Rnd 5: Sc in each st around.
  • Rnds 6-7: Rep Rnd 5 twice.
  • Remove marker, fasten off CB with long yarn tail, approximately 12”/30.5 cm, for seaming.

Spots (Make as many as desired. Photographed sample has seven Spots.)

  • With CB, work as for Bottom through Rnd 2.
  • Remove marker, fasten off CB with long yarn tail, approximately 12”/30.5 cm, for seaming.

Assembly and Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in any remaining yarn tails from start of pieces and from end of Bottom.
  • Position first safety Eye at on Head as desired. When satisfied with position, secure by attaching washer firmly inside of Head. Repeat for second Eye.
  • With yarn needle and CB from yarn tails, attach Spots to top (the center, flat area of Rnds 1-10) of Body with whipstitch (see Pattern Notes). In the photos below, I attached 5 of my 7 Spots before attaching the Head, and 2 additional Spots after attaching the Head. Leave the sides (Rnds 11-16) of the Body unmodified until the Head is attached.
  • When ready, position the Head on the side of the Body so that the safety eyes are on the top/ladybug back and the Head does not touch the final Rnd 16 (which will be used for seaming).
  • With yarn needle and CB from yarn tail, join Head to Body with whipstitch (see Pattern Notes), stopping with about 1” (2.5 cm) remains unseamed. Stuff firmly with fiber filling. Continue seaming Head to Body with whipstitch.
  • Continue attaching Spots with whipstitch seam to top and/or sides of Body.
  • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails from Head and Spots onto inside of Body.
  • Position Bottom with Right Side facing out underneath Body as shown in photo below. Line up stitches for seaming. Thread yarn needle with CA from Body. Join Body to Bottom with whipstitch seam (see Pattern Notes) through center loops as shown in center photo above. When about 15 stitches remain unseamed, stuff Body firmly with fiber filling. Continue seaming until Body and Bottom are joined.
  • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on Bottom.
