Mélange Blanket Square 19: Tristan Stitch Mitered Square

Our nineteenth square pattern is the Tristan Stitch Mitered Square by OneLittleHook. You can find Julie online at Facebook | Instagram | LoveCrafts | Pinterest | Ravelry
You can see Julie’s version below. She used one color in King Cole Fashion Aran yarn.

I am using King Cole Big Value Aran (available through your local yarn shop or online at LoveCrafts or Wool Warehouse UK) and my Denise US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook for my blanket so I can keep consistent gauge across all my squares…
But since the Tristan Stitch Mitered Square is worked from the outside in, it is not very easy to adjust size. I ended up using the H-8/5 mm crochet hook in my Denise set for this particular square to keep it at the right size. For my version of the Tristan Stitch Mitered Square, I alternated colors, starting with Nougat, then Berry, then Ocean, changing colors in the last slip stitch at the end of the even rows through Row 14. After Row 16, I did not change color and finished Row 17 in Nougat. Please note that while Julie calls the loop where she inserts the slip stitch “the front horizontal bar,” and this is for her the same as the third loop (very back loop) on a half double crochet as the Tristan Stitch is like a taller half double crochet in that it finishes with 3 loops. If you’re new to working in the third loop, you may find these tutorials by Stitches n Scraps helpful. After finishing, I wet blocked the square to the measurements.
