Miranda Granny Square Pillow Pattern

I’m happy to join in the fourth annual Cozy at Home Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet with a granny square pillow pattern! The Miranda Pillow is the second pattern in this year’s Cozy at Home CAL and it uses two crochet favorites: granny squares on the front and corner-to-corner (C2C) stitches on the back.

For this year’s Cozy at Home Crochet Along, I knew I wanted to make a granny square pillow pattern. To me, granny squares are synonymous with comfort and cozy.

For decorative pillows, the back is not as frequently seen, so I decided to use a corner-to-corner (C2C) diagonal box stitch square instead. Less yarn tails to weave in, and easy to make perfectly square! This was a fun project to put together with two of my favorite crochet techniques: granny squares and corner-to-corner.

Miranda Pillow

Granny Square Pillow Pattern by Underground Crafter

This pillow pattern combines two crochet favorites: granny squares and the corner-to-corner (C2C) diagonal box stitch. A button closure makes it easy to wash the cover or change it out seasonally. Use three or more colors and six buttons for your version. This is the second pattern in the fourth annual Cozy at Home Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet.

Finished Size

  • Pillow Cover: Approximately 15” (38 cm) square when seamed to fit 16” (40.5 cm) square pillow form.

Materials

Gauge

  • Miranda Granny Square = 4” (10 cm) square through Rnd 5 in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

  • Ch 1 at the start and sl st at the end of Rnds do NOT count as stitches.
  • Moogly has a helpful video tutorial demonstrating the standing dc here. Alternatively, join with sl st, ch 1, dc in same st.
  • The video below demonstrates four ways to crochet into a chain space. I used the first method for this pattern.

Decrease to end

Assemble and Finish Pillow Cover

  • Designate a Right Side of Back of Pillow. Position Back of Pillow and Front of Pillow with Right Sides together so that the long yarn tail from Back of Pillow is at the side of the top where the button loops are. Position buttons between first and second row of boxes on Back of Pillow to line up with spacing of button loops on Front of Pillow as shown in the photo below.
  • Thread yarn needle with approximately 1 yd (1 m) in CC. Sew buttons to Back of Pillow. Weave in yarn on Wrong Side of Back of Pillow.
  • Position Front of Pillow and Back of Pillow with Wrong Sides together so that button loops and buttons are on the same edge. Thread yarn needle with CA from Back of Pillow.
  • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail so it is positioned at the top corner of the Back of Pillow. Seam together three sides of pillow with mattress stitch, leaving the top (with buttons/button loops) unseamed.
  • With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of Pillow Cover.
  • Insert pillow form into Pillow Cover. Use button loops to secure pillow inside.
