I’m excited to kick off the fifth annual Halloween Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet with the crochet pumpkin doll pattern for the Pumpkin Patch Pal. This adorable softie is crocheted in one piece as a no-sew project… but, if you’d rather crochet the limbs separately and then sew them to the body, I’ve include alternative instructions so you can make it your way!

Growing up in New York City, one of the first signs of the Halloween season was the arrival of pumpkins at the grocery stores. In the past few years, I saw fewer large pumpkins for carving and more small pumpkins with hand-drawn faces. The Pumpkin Patch Pal is a crochet pumpkin doll pattern inspired by these smaller and more free wheeling pumpkin characters. The Pumpkin Patch Pal is a beginner-friendly pattern and I’ve included two types of instructions so that you can can crochet it all in one piece (if you hate sewing) or crochet the limbs separately and attach (if you hate awkwardly crocheting onto partially stuffed softies).

Pumpkin Patch Pal
Crochet Pumpkin Doll Pattern by Underground Crafter

This crochet pumpkin doll pattern is designed as a one-piece, no-sew project with alternative instructions for sewing the limbs separately and seaming on. Make it your way! This pattern is part of the fifth annual Halloween Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet.
Finished Size
- One Size: 12.5” (32 cm) from stem to feet after stuffing.
Materials
- Big Twist Value yarn (100% acrylic, 6 oz/170 g, 380 yd/347 m) – 1 skein each in Orange (CA), Slime (CB), and Chocolate Brown (CC), or approximately 80 yd (73 m) in CA, 10 yd (9 m) in CB, and 60 yd (55 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
- US Size G-4/4 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Locking stitch markers.
- Yarn needle.
- I used the MECHEER crochet hook set including yarn needles, stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape, and case.
- Fiber filling (available online at Herrschners | Amazon).
- Safety eyes – 1 pair. I used round kawaii eyes from the MUCUNNIA 528-piece set.
Gauge
- 20 hdc = 4” (10 cm) across. Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern. Stitches should be small so fiber filling doesn’t show.

Pattern Instructions
Pumpkin Patch Pal
Body
- With CA, ch 36.
- Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, slstBL in next 5 ch, scBL in next 5 ch, hdcBL in next 15 ch, scBL in next 5 ch, slstBL in next 5 ch. (35 sts)
- Row 2: Turn, ch 1 slstBL in first 5 sts, scBL in next 5 sts, hdcBL in next 15 sts, scBL in next 5 sts, slstBL in next 5 sts.
- Repeat Row 2 until piece measures approximately 6” (15 cm) across at the widest part when laid flat and folded in half as shown in the photo below. Do not fasten off.

Embellish Face
- Designate one side as right (front) side. Find the ridge closest to the center on right side and then find the valley between the second and third ridge away from the center. Position the first safety eye at the 5th hdc in the identified valley. When satisfied with position, secure by attaching washer firmly on the wrong side. Find the valley between the second and third ridge away from the center on the opposite side. Position the second safety eye at the 5th hdc in the identified valley. Secure as for the first safety eye.

- Cut a strand in CC approximately 24” (61 cm) long. Thread yarn needle with CC. Starting approximately 3 stitches below bottom of eyes and centered between eyes, use the embroidery back stitch (see Pattern Notes) to create outline for Triangle Nose.

- Use embroidery satin stitch (see Pattern Notes) to fill in outline for Triangle Nose.

- Repeat process for Cut Out Mouth by creating outline with embroidery back stitch and then filling in with embroidery satin stitch. When finished with Mouth, secure CC on wrong (back) side by weaving in yarn tails with yarn needle or with knots.

- Continuing with crochet hook, join across first and last rows with a slip stitch seam (see Pattern Notes). Fasten off (with long yarn tail if seam ends at bottom, or cut a strand in CA approximately 18”/45.5 cm long if seam ends at top). Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail or strand of CA and cinch bottom edge closed by weaving yarn needle through each stitch on bottom edge. (You can find a video tutorial for cinching using a slouchy hat as an example below.)
- If you can’t see the video above for cinching, click HERE to watch it on YouTube.
- Slowly tighten yarn tail to pull bottom closed until you have an opening approximately 1” (2.5 cm) in diameter at the bottom. Repeat for the top seam so that both seams are approximately the same diameter. Weave in any remaining yarn tails or secure with knots on inside.
