I learned about the Christmas pickle legend a few years ago. If you’re new to it, it’s a 140-ish year old American tradition wherein a pickle-shaped ornament is hidden on the Christmas tree. The first person to find it either gets to open the first gift or gets an extra gift (depending on which version of the story you’re following). This crochet Christmas pickle pattern lets you start your own handmade tradition at home!

Gherkin Ornament
Crochet Christmas Pickle Pattern by Underground Crafter

This crochet Christmas pickle pattern makes a cute ornament to hide on your tree or to gift. It’s a great stashbuster that can be made with less than 20 yards (18 meters) of medium weight yarn.
Finished Size
- Approximately 3” (7.5 cm) tall before stuffing.
Materials
- Big Twist Value yarn (100% acrylic, 6 oz/170 g, 380 yd/347 m) – 1 skein in Slime, or approximately 20 yd (18 m) in any medium weight yarn.
- US Size G-6/4 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Yarn needle.
- Locking stitch marker.
- I used the MECHEER crochet hook set including yarn needles, stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape, and case.
- Fiber filling.
- Ornament hook (optional).
Gauge
- Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern. Stitches should be small so fiber filling doesn’t show through.
