6-Petaled Crochet Flower Hexagon Pattern

6-Petaled Flower Hexagon

Crochet Flower Hexagon Pattern by Underground Crafter

This crochet flower hexagon has a textured center and six petals. This pattern was designed for the third annual International Crochet Month Blog Hop with Underground Crafter

Finished Size

  • One Size: 4.25” (11 cm) across (flat edge to flat edge)/5” (13 cm) across (point to opposite point).

Materials

  • Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash yarn (available online at LoveCrafts | Jimmy Beans | Wool Warehouse UK) (100% superwash wool, 3.5 oz/100 g, 220 yd/200 m) – 1 skein each in 346 Daisy Yellow (CA), 871 White (CB), 887 Wasabi (CC), and 885 In the Navy (CD), or approximately 15 yd (14 m) in each of 4 colors in any medium weight yarn
  • KnitPro Waves 2.0 (available online at LoveCrafts | Amazon) US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • 4.25” (11 cm) across (flat edge to flat edge)/5” (13 cm) across (point to opposite point) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful video tutorial identifying the back loop here
  • bob – 4-repeat bobble – [Yo, insert hook in st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] 4 times in same st, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • CD – Color D
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • FPsc – front post single crochet – Insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • RS – right (front) side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • WS – wrong (back) side
  • yo – yarn over
  • [] Repeat instructions within brackets as indicated.
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated. 
  • () Work instructions between parentheses into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • There are several ways to crochet into chain spaces. For this pattern, I used the first method shown in the video below.

  • Considering a project where you join hexagons together? Watch my video below on how to join motifs 5 ways (mattress stitch, whipstitch, slip stitch, single crochet, or join-as-you-go). For this motif, unless you want a very open project with limited structure, I would not recommend join-as-you-go. As you fasten off CD at the end of Rnd 5, consider whether a longer yarn tail would be helpful for your join.

Pattern Instructions

Hexagon

  • With CA, ch 4, skip 3 ch, sl st to next ch to form ring. 
  • Rnd 1: (WS) Ch 1, [bob in ring, ch 1] 5 times, bob in ring, join with sc (counts as ch-1 sp) to first bob. (12 sts/6 bob + 6 ch-1 sp)
  • Rnd 2: Turn to RS, ch 1, sc in same ch-1 sp, [FPsc around next bob, sc in next ch-1 sp] 5 times, FPsc around next bob, join CB with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA. (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st [over next 2 sts work: 2 dcBL in next st, dc2togBL in previous and next st, ch 3, scBL in previous st] around, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CB. (6 petals/24 sts + 6 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 4: Join CC with sl st to any sc on RS, ch 1, working behind petals and starting in same st [6 dc in next sc, skip (next 3 sts + ch-3 sp)] around, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CC. (36 sts)
  • Rnd 5: (RS) Skip first 3 sts, join CD with sl st to next st (fourth dc in first group of 6 dc), ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st, ch 2,** 2 dc in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts + 6 ch-2 sp)
  • Fasten off CD (see Pattern Notes)
  • With yarn needle, weave in ends (except those used for seaming) on WS of hexagon.
