Last November, I went back to New York City for a few days to visit family and friends. When I was hanging out with Mary Beth, we decided to visit Kinokuniya, an awesome (mostly) book store that sells great Japanese pattern books. I bought three, including one filled with floral motifs. The flower at the center of this pattern was inspired by one of those motifs, but I added my own spin to it (of course!).

Clematis Flower Granny Square
12 Inch Granny Square Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter
This 12 inch granny square crochet pattern with a 6-petal flower at the center was designed for the 2026 Moogly Crochet Along.
Finished Size
- Motif: 12” (30.5 cm) square.
Materials
- WeCrochet Brava Worsted yarn (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz/100 g/218 yd/100 m) – 1 skein each in 26135 Cotton Candy (CA), 26136 Lady Slipper (CB), 25707 Peapod (CC), and 25708 Cornflower (CD), or approximately 16 yd (14.5 m) in CA, 66 yd (60.5 m) in CB, 48 yd (44 m) in CC, and 56 yd (51 m) in CD in any medium weight yarn.
- Clover Amour US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Yarn needle.
- Locking stitch marker.
Gauge
- Motif = 12” (30.5 cm) square in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Pattern Notes
- Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.
- Entire square is crocheted in the round with the right (front) side facing up.
- There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. In this pattern, I use the first method shown in the video below.

Pattern Instructions
Motif
- With CB, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, place stitch marker in last st. (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: [Sc in next st, ch 5, sl st to same st, sc in next st] around, join CA with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB, remove stitch marker. (6 sc + 3 ch-5 loops)
- Rnd 3: Ch 1, starting in same st and pushing loops towards front as you work, [*(dc, ch 2, dc) in next st,** ch 2] 5 times, rep * to ** once, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (12 dc + 12 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, working behind Rnd 3, [ch 4, skip next (dc, ch 2, dc), sc in next ch-2 sp] 5 times, ch 4, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA. (6 sc + 6 ch-4 sp)
- Rnd 5: Join CB with sl st to any ch-4 sp, ch 1, starting in same ch-4 sp [(sc, ch 4, 3 tr, ch 3, skip 2 ch, sl st to first ch, 3 tr, ch 4, sc) in ch-4 sp] around, join with sl st to first sc. (6 petals)
- Rnd 6: Working behind petals, [ch 3, sc in skipped sc on Rnd 4] around, join with sl st to first ch-3 sp, fasten off CB.
- Rnd 7: Join CC with sl st to any ch-3 sp, ch 1, starting in same ch-3 sp, *[(3 dc, ch 1)] twice in next ch3-sp, skip next sc; rep from * around to last ch-3 sp, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, join with sc (counts as ch-1 sp) to first dc. (36 dc + 12 ch-1 sp)

Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in ends on wrong side of square.
- Spray or wet block to measurements (see Pattern Notes).
