Long time readers may remember this blanket, which I finished back in 2012 for my younger sister. At the time, she was living in New Orleans and wanted something in Saints colors. I didn’t think she’d end up there permanently, so I wanted to pick a classic pattern that could move with her somewhere else. (She’s in Houston now, by the way.) I always loved the look of the classic double Irish chain quilting pattern, and we all know I love granny squares, so after a little bit of measuring and sketching, the idea for this blanket was born.

Free crochet pattern: Double Irish Chain Granny Square Blanket by Underground CrafterThis is a beginner-friendly pattern, but due to the large size you will need plenty of patience. My one tip is don’t wait until the end to weave in all the ends. It’s much more manageable if you weave in the ends after you complete each square or as you join each section together.

  1. So beautiful! Brings back so many memories for me. I learned to crochet a bit in Elementary School. Of course the Granny square was what I learned to make. I am a child of the 60’s and 70’s. My Mom made afghans with the Granny Squares. She passed away right after I was married but we still have one of the afghans she made. In the Groovy 70’s colors of course!
