Free crochet pattern: Mitered Square Scarf in Paintbox Yarns Chunky Pots yarn by Underground CrafterI love the mitered square in crochet, but I don’t love predicting how many stitches I’ll need on each side to get the width I want. That’s why I like to use increasing, rather than decreasing, to create my mitered squares. (Or, at least to make the first one!)

Free crochet pattern: Mitered Square Scarf in Paintbox Yarns Chunky Pots yarn by Underground CrafterCrochet increases are also easier than crochet decreases, and I wanted to make this mitered square scarf beginner friendly. After all, it’s has a great, unisex look so it would be a wonderful gift for anyone on your handmade holiday gift list. It’s easy to adjust the width and the length to make the perfect size.

Free crochet pattern: Mitered Square Scarf in Paintbox Yarns Chunky Pots yarn by Underground CrafterI used Paintbox Yarns Chunky Pots, a new-to-me yarn, for my version. It’s a self-striping bulky yarn and it’s both soft and affordable. It’s only available online through LoveCrochet.com (and LoveKnitting.com). I loved the earthy tones of this colorway, which is called Making Hay.

Finished Size

  • Customizable. Photographed sample measures 5” (13 cm) wide x 61” (155 cm) long.

Materials

  • Paintbox Yarns Chunky Pots yarn (100% acrylic, 7.1 oz/200 g, 297 yd/272 m) – 2 skeins in PP01 Making Hay, or approximately 297 yd (272 m) in any bulky weight yarn.
