Crochet Pattern: Diagonal Rainbows Baby Blanket

I’m so excited to share this pattern with you today! I originally designed this corner-to-corner baby blanket for the FaveCrafts Blog, and they titled the post “The Stunningly Beautiful Crochet Baby Blanket You Need In Your LIfe.” I think it came out great, and I’d love to hear what you think!

This post contains affiliate linksI may receive compensation (at no added cost to you) if you make a purchase using these links. The yarn for the sample was generously provided by Lion Brand. This pattern was updated on May 3, 2023 to include a video tutorial. Let me know if you have any questions!

This pattern is crocheted from corner to corner, increasing to the midpoint and then decreasing to the end. The design creates a square blanket, but the size is adjustable.

I crocheted my version using a rainbow of Vanna’s Choice Baby colors. This yarn has since been discontinued, but you can find a rainbow of colors still available in Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn.

I used this same color combination, with the addition of Angel White, in my sample for the Scrappy Shells Blanket pattern, which originally appeared in the February, 2015 issue of I Like Crochet.

But, in spite of its name, you don’t have to crochet the Diagonal Rainbows Baby Blanket pattern in rainbow colors. It also makes a great stash buster project! You can change colors at the end of any row. If you do choose to make a scrap yarn version, remember that rows towards the middle use the largest amounts of yarn, so use your small yarn odds and ends at the beginning and end of the project.

  1. Hi Marie,

This is Julia from FaveCrafts – thanks so much for sharing this amazing pattern with our readers on the FaveCrafts Blog! 2. If you continue to make it bigger by repeating row 3 like you suggest, does that move it away from being a square to being rectangular?

  3. What a beautiful blanket! The bright colours are so nice- a great alternative to pastels, especially for baby boys or young kids. The texture of the stitches looks amazing.

  4. Having difficulty with decreasing. Can you suggest someplace where I can
find picture of 1st row of decrease, so I can see how and where that row ends?
    Thanks for your consideration.
