Today’s pattern for the Sunshine Granny Square uses chain spaces to form lacy sunrays. This square really brightened my day, and I hope it does the same for you!

Chain spaces form lacy sunrays in this granny square variation. It’s one of several motifs used in the Classic Granny with a Twist Blanket.

Finished Size

  • Motif: 6.75” (17 cm) square.

Materials

  • Red Heart With Love yarn (100% acrylic, 7 oz/198 g/370 yd/338 m) – 1 skein in 1201 Daffodil, or approximately 50 yd (46 m) in any medium weight yarn.


  • US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. (I used a Clover Amour hook.)
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Motif = 6.75” (17 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

  • dc – double crochet
  • ea – each
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space

  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • () Instructions within parenthesis are worked into indicated stitch or space.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.

Motif

  • Ch 6, sk 5 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc, here and throughout), dc in ring, ch 2, [2 dc in ring, ch 2] 7 times, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (16 sts + 8 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, ch 2, sk ch-2 sp,[dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, ch 2, sk ch-2 sp] 7 times, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (24 sts + 8 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 3: Ch 3, 3 dc in next st, dc in next st, ch 2, sk ch-2 sp, [dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, dc in next st, ch 2, sk ch-2 sp] 7 times, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (40 sts + 8 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 4: Ch 3, [*2 hdc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, sc in ch-2 sp, sc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, dc in next st, ch 3, sk ch-2 sp,** dc in next st] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (52 sts + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 5: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, dc in next 5 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in next 5 sts, 3 dc in next st, ch 3, sk ch-3 sp, [3 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in next 5 sts, 3 dc in next st, ch 3, sk ch-3 sp] 3 times, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (64 sts + 4 ch-1 sp + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in next 7 sts, [*2 dc in ch-1 sp, dc in next 8 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp, dc in next 8 sts] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp, join with sl st to top of ch 3. Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm) for joining. (88 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)

Finishing

  • Join to other granny squares using your preferred method. With yarn needle, weave in ends.
