Today’s pattern is a variation of the Double Crochet Granny Square that mimics a windmill using corner and center chain spaces. This is a nice solid square with a decorative look that would work for a variety of different projects.

Corner and center chain spaces mimic a windmill in this variation on the double crochet granny square. It’s one of several motifs used in the Classic Granny with a Twist Blanket.

Finished Size

  • Motif: 6.75” (17 cm) square.

Materials

  • Red Heart With Love yarn (100% acrylic, 7 oz/198 g/370 yd/338 m) – 1 skein in 1601 Lettuce, or approximately 50 yd (46 m) in any medium weight yarn.


  • US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. (I used a Clover Amour hook.)
  • Yarn needle

Gauge

  • Motif = 6.75” (17 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Motif

  • Ch 6, sk 5 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc, here and throughout), 3 dc in ring, [ch 2, 4 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 2, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of ch 3 to join. (16 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same ch-2 sp, [*dc in next st, sk 2 sts, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of ch 3 to join. (24 sts + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same ch-3 sp, [*dc in next 3 sts, ch 2, dc in next 3 sts,** (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, 2 dc in first ch-3 sp, ch 2, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of ch 3 to join. (40 sts + 4 ch-2 sp + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same ch-3 sp, [*dc in next 5 sts, ch 2, sk ch-2 sp, dc in next 5 sts,** (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, 2 dc in first ch-3 sp, ch 2, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of ch 3 to join. (56 sts + 4 ch-2 sp + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in same ch-3 sp, [*dc in next 7 sts, ch 2, sk ch-2 sp, dc in next 7 sts,** (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, 2 dc in first ch-3 sp, ch 2, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of ch 3 to join. (72 sts + 4 ch-2 sp + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 6: Ch 3, dc in same ch-3 sp, [*dc in next 9 sts, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next 9 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, 2 dc in first ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of ch 3 to join. Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm) for joining. (96 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)

Finishing

  • Join to other granny squares using your preferred method. With yarn needle, weave in ends.
