Finished Sizes

  • Newborn (Child/Teen, Adult).
    • Newborn: 14” (35.5 cm) hat circumference x 6” (15 cm) height.
    • Child/Teen: 20.5” (52 cm) hat circumference x 8.25” (21 cm) height.
    • Adult: 23.5” (23 cm) hat circumference x 9” (59.5 cm) height.

Materials

  • Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Worsted yarn (100% washable Merino wool, 8 oz/228 g/400 yd/366 m) – 1 skein in Canton (MC), or approximately 85/145/185 yd (77/132.5/170 m) in any medium weight yarn.
  • Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Worsted yarn (100% washable Merino wool, 2 oz/60 g/105 yd/96 m) – 1 mini skein in Thomas Circle (CC), or approximately 20/30/40 yd (18/27.5/36.5 m) in any medium weight yarn.
  • US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Locking stitch marker or scrap yarn.

Gauge

  • Through Rnd 3 = 3.5” (9 cm) diameter in pattern. For best fit, always check your gauge.

  • Starting at crown, with MC, ch 4, sk 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc, here and throughout), 10 dc in ring, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (11 sts)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (22 sts)
  • Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st and next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st; rep from * around, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (33 sts)
  • Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same st and next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * around, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (44 sts)
  • Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in same st and next 3 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts; rep from * around, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. (55 sts) NEWBORN SIZE ONLY: CONTINUE ON TO INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEWBORN SIZE.

Newborn and Child/Teen sizes only

  • Next Rnd: Ch 3, dc in same st,*sk 1 st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around to last 2 sts, sk 2 sts, sl st to top of ch 3 to join. – 54 (76) sts. CONTINUE ON TO INSTRUCTIONS FOR WORKING EVEN IN PATTERN.

All Sizes – Work even in pattern

  • Rnd 10: Join CC with sl st between first 2 dc of previous Rnd, ch 1, sk 2 sts, *sc before next dc, ch 1, sk 2 sts; rep from * around, sl st to first sc to join.
  • Rnd 11: Change to MC with sl st to ch-1 sp, ch 3, dc in same st, sk next st, *2 dc in next ch-1 sp, sk next st; rep from * around, sl st to top of ch 3 to join.
  • Rep Rnds 10-11 until hat measures approximately 4.5”/6.75”/7.5” (11.5 cm/17 cm/19 cm) from crown, ending after Rnd 11. Fasten off CC. CONTINUE ON TO INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPECIFIC SIZE.

Newborn size only – Decrease to brim

  • Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc2tog in first 2 sts, sc in next 7 sts, *sc2tog, sc in next 7 sts; rep from * around, do not join, place stitch marker in last st and move up each Rnd to mark last st. (48 sts)
  • Rnd 13: Sc in each st around.
  • Rnd 14: *Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around. (36 sts)
  • Rep Rnd 13 until hat measures approximately 5.75” (14.5 cm) from brim, changing to CC in last st of Rnd, fasten off MC.
  • Final Rnd: Rep Rnd 13, sl st to join to first sc. Fasten off.

Child/Teen size only – Decrease to brim

  • Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc2tog in first 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, *sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around, do not join, place stitch marker in last st and move up each Rnd to mark last st. (57 sts)
  • Rnd 13: Sc in each st around.
  • Rnd 14: Sc2tog, sc in each st around to last 2 sts, sc2tog. (55 sts)
  • Rep Rnd 13 until hat measures approximately 8” (20.5 cm) from crown, changing to CC in last st of Rnd, fasten off MC.
  • Final Rnd: Rep Rnd 13, sl st to join to first sc. Fasten off.

Adult – Decrease to brim

  • Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc2tog in first 2 sts, sc in next 6 sts, *sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts; rep from * around, do not join, place stitch marker in last st and move up each Rnd to mark last st. (77 sts)
  • Rnd 13: Sc in each st around.
  • Rnd 14: *Sc2tog, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * around. (66 sts)
