Crochet Pattern: Fantail Pencil (Or Crochet Hook) Case with No-Sew Liner

Free crochet pattern: Fantail Pencil (Or Crochet Hook) Case with No-Sew Liner in Lion Brand Jeans by Underground Crafter | A beautiful fantail stitch combines with a sturdy, no-sew liner to keep pencils or hooks inside and away from stitches. Use Duck Brand Color Duck Tape, VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back fasteners, and a Buttons Galore and More Sparkle Button to make a no-sew liner that shows your crochet pride wherever you go!I’m so excited to kick off CAL Central’s Back-to-School crochet-a-long with a pencil (or crochet hook) case featuring one of my favorite crochet stitches, the fantail stitch. I’ve combined this lacy stitch with a sturdy, no-sew liner that keeps your pencils (or hooks) inside so they don’t poke through your stitches. Make the liner in a contrasting color to really highlight your stitches against a solid background. Last year, I discovered the joys of making no-sew liners with Duck Color Duct Tape. (You can find my first bag pattern using one of these liners here.) When I was thinking about the Back-to-School CAL, I knew I wanted to do a pencil case with a no-sew liner and I was really excited about trying out Lion Brand Jeans yarn.

Use Duck Brand Color Duck Tape, VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back fasteners, and a Buttons Galore and More Sparkle Button to make a no-sew liner that shows your crochet pride wherever you go!I love the classic denim colors of the yarn and I always think of denim when I think of heading back to school.

You can change up the Duck Color Duct Tape liner color to be just right for you (or whoever you gift this pencil case to), but I do recommend choosing a color that contrasts with your yarn so that the stitches really pop. I used VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back square fasteners to close the liner because I’m using mine for hooks, pencils, and pens. If you plan to fill it with smaller objects, you can use the solid tape fastener so the entire top seals closed.

And, of course, the case wouldn’t be complete without a button! I chose a Buttons Galore and More Sparkle Buttons in Plum since purple and pink are so very Underground Crafter!

No-Sew Liner

  • Once you have a set of horizontal strips that are slightly larger than TWICE the height of your fantail case pieces, lay strips of tape with the sticky side DOWN on top of those strips in vertical rows. The liner is sturdier when the tape crosses in a different direction (and, it’s also easier to do). This part of the liner should measure slightly larger than the width of your fantail case pieces.

  • Trim the excess tape away so that your liner measures just smaller than TWICE the height and equal the width of your fantail case. Discard the excess tape.
