I’m sharing a free crochet granny square shawl pattern today. The Beach Stroll Memories Shawl uses a rectangular variation on the classic granny stitch pattern to create an airy shawl that you can wear year round.

Every January, I like to return to the basics. After going through the whirlwind of holiday crafting, I want to settle into simple crochet projects for me. Another thing that happens in January (at least in New York City) is that it gets cold and I occasionally entertain fantasies about the awesomeness of summer. (Don’t talk to me about that topic in August, though, because by then I’m exhausted by the oppressive humidity.)

I had some Cloudborn Superwash Merino Worsted Twist yarn, a Craftsy exclusive, remaining from when I designed the At The Shore Blanket. The colors really reminded me of taking a stroll on the beach, and that’s how I came up with the name for this shawl. This yarn is now discontinued, but you can find recommended substitutions at YarnSub.

This pattern is very easy to customize. You can choose your striping sequence, you can decide how long to make each panel, and you can stop at any point (or continue on) to make the panels smaller or larger. I used the same striping sequence for the outer panels and reversed it for the middle panel to keep things interesting.
