In keeping with the Christmas in July theme, I’m sharing the crochet pattern for the Puff Stitch Coffee Cup Sleeve. This unisex, buttoned cozy is a great project to stock in your handmade gift closet to use as a last-minute gift later.

I don’t really use coffee cup sleeves because I’m much more partial to cold drinks than hot. (I’m an iced tea gal, actually.)

I do come from a long line of coffee drinkers, however, so I know all about heat-numbed fingertips in the morning. This is a simple textured sleeve using the puff stitch, one of my favorites. (If you’re new to the puff stitch, don’t worry: I linked up a video tutorial to help you out.) I used a denim color yarn, so it looks like a pair of brand new jeans. I added a brown button, but your version can be as colorful as you like!

I also made my sleeve a little bit long — assuming I’d wash it and the cotton yarn would shrink a little, and because I use the plastic refillable cups, which are a little wider than the paper coffee cups. You can make yours a little shorter if you use paper cups and aren’t worried about shrinkage.

This textured, unisex coffee cup sleeve keeps hands cool while adding a handmade touch to your morning beverage.

Finished Size

  • Coffee Sleeve: 3.5” (9 cm) wide x 10” (25.5) long.

Materials

  • Lily Sugar’n Cream Denim yarn (100% cotton, 2.5 oz/71 g/120 yd/110 m) – 1 skein in 1114 Indigo, or approximately 60 yd (55 m) in any medium weight cotton yarn.
  • US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn or tapestry needle with eye small enough to sew through button.
  • 1” (2.5 cm) sew through button.

Gauge

  • 7 sc = 2” (5 cm). Exact gauge is not critical for this project, but stitches should be tight to keep hands from getting burned by coffee cup.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • ch – chain
  • ea – each
  • pf – 3-repeat puff stitch – Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, [yo, insert hook in same st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through 7 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.
  • If you can’t see the video for the puff stitch above, click HERE to watch it on YouTube.
  • rep – repeat
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • yo – yarn over

Pattern Note

  • This sleeve is slightly longer than most so it can fit over the plastic, reusable cups and so it will still be usable after washing (and potentially shrinking). If you aren’t worried about shrinkage or use paper coffee cups, you can continue your repeats until the sleeve measures approximately 8.75″ (22 cm) before forming buttonhole.
