Crochet Pattern: Charlie Hat in 4 Sizes

Get ready for the colder weather with the Charlie Hat! This crochet beanie pattern has lots of texture and a pom pom to embellish it. The Charlie Hat is made with a self-patterning yarn that does all the color work for you. Best of all, it’s available in 4 sizes from newborn through adult, so you can make up one for most everyone in the family (or on your handmade holiday gift list).

I love making scarves with Lion Brand Scarfie because each skein has enough yarn to finish an entire project. Get my free crochet patterns for the Bulky Faux Mistake Rib Scarf and the Walking in the Sand Scarf if you love textured, unisex (one-skein!) scarves, too. But I’ve been making a lot of pom pom beanies and slouchy hats lately, and pom poms (especially the extra large ones I make with my Clover Pom Pom Maker) eat up a good deal of yarn. I thought I’d try out Scarfie for a hat, and I love the result. I hope you do, too!

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I struggle with naming my patterns, so you may wonder why I settled on the Charlie Hat for this project. Lately I’ve been listening to audiobooks instead of music during my commute, so I can crochet and “read” at the same time. (According to at least one cognitive scientist, listening to audiobooks can be counted as reading, so I’m going with that!) While I was working on this hat, I was listening to Firestarter by Stephen King. I have seen the movie several times and I wanted to see how the book was different (and similar).

When the hat was finished, I shared a picture with my friend, Pia from Stitches n Scraps. She thought the colors had the look of flames and fire so I went with the Charlie Hat, named after Charlie McGee.

By the way, if you want to check out what I’m currently reading, you can follow me on Goodreads. If you’d like to develop an audiobook habit, you can get a free trial of Audible, including two audiobooks, here.

If you make your own Charlie Hat, I’d love to see it! Share your progress and questions by tagging me on Facebook as @Underground Crafter, Instragram as @ucrafter, or Twitter as @ucrafter. 1. I had purchased a couple skeins of Scarfie yarn with the intention of using them for “something”, but can’t remember what!! Now, I hope to make a couple of your hats with them. Thanks for the pattern.
