Crochet Pattern: Stop and Smell the Flowers Granny Square

Stop and Smell the Flowers is a floral crochet granny square that combines different textures and stitches for a beautiful look. It was originally designed for the Mini-Mystery Crochet Along (MMCAL) #14 with A Crocheted Simplicity but is now available after the big reveal! These crochet alongs are short, mysterious, and free. Mini Mystery Crochet Along 14 with Underground Crafter

This MMCAL was posted in three segments, but all three are now available.

I crocheted my sample with Red Heart With Love because it comes in great colors, it’s soft, and it’s an easy-care yarn. If you don’t have any available, choose another medium weight (worsted/#4/aran) yarn that is easy to wash. If you don’t like to use acrylic, cotton would be a nice (but weightier) alternative. You can see the colors I used in the image below, arranged from left to right as Color A, Color B, and Color C.

This floral granny square combines different textures and stitches for a beautiful look. It was designed for Mini-Mystery Crochet Along #14 with A Crocheted Simplicity and is now available as a complete pattern. Learn more about the Mini-Mystery Crochet Alongs here.

Finished Size

  • Motif = 12” (30.5 cm) square.

Materials

  • Red Heart With Love yarn (100% acrylic, 7 oz/198 g/370 yd/338 m) – 1 skein in 1939 Papaya (CA), 1 skein in 1441 Light Grey (CB), and 1 skein in 1502 Iced Aqua (CC), or approximately 80 yd (73 m) in CA, 35 yd (32 m) in CB, and 50 yd (45.5 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
  • US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. (I used my Laurel Hill Trai wooden hook.)
  • Clover Quick Locking Stitch Marker set, or locking stitch markers.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Through Rnd 7 = 5” (13 cm) square in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • cdc – crossed double crochet – Skip st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st. Each cdc counts as 2 sts. New Stitch a Day has a helpful video tutorial for this stitch here.
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • FPdc – front post double crochet – Yo, insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice. A video tutorial for this stitch is available here.
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • yo – yarn over
  • Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
  • () Instructions between parentheses are worked into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • Most of this project is crocheted in the round with the right (front) side facing up. One section is crocheted flat in rows.
  • Ch 1 at beginning of Rounds and Rows does NOT count as a stitch.
  • In Rnd 12, you will work into skipped stitches from previous rounds. Work over the ch-sp and make sure to draw up loops to the same height as current round.

Pattern Instructions – Center Floral Square

  • With CA, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring. Begin working in the round.
  • Rnd 1: (Right Side) Ch 1, 16 hdc in ring, sl st to first hdc to join. (16 sts)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 1, starting in same st, [FPdc around next st, 3 dc in next st] 8 times, sl st to first FPdc to join. (32 sts)
  • Rnd 3: Ch 1, starting in same st, [FPdc around next FPdc, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st] 8 times, sl st to first FPdc to join. (40 sts)
  • Rnd 4: Sl st in first 2 sts, ch 1, starting in same st, [3 dc in next 2 sts, skip 1 st, sl st in next FPdc, skip 1 st] 8 times, sl st to first st to join. (56 sts)
  • Rnd 5: Working behind petals of Rnd 4, [*ch 4, skip 6 dc,** sl st in next sl st] 7 times, rep from * to **, sl st in first ch-4 sp to join. Fasten off CA. (8 ch-4 sp)
  • With Right Side facing, join CB with sl st to any ch-4 sp.
  • Rnd 6: Ch 1, 6 sc in same ch-4 sp and in next 7 ch-4 sp, sl st to first sc to join. (48 sts)
  • Rnd 7: Ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; rep from * around twice more, rep from * to **, 2 dc in first st, ch 1, sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc to join. Fasten off CB. (60 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)

Pattern Instructions – Corner Triangles

  • ✪With Right Side facing, join CC with sl st to any ch-2 sp. Begin working flat in rows.
  • Row 1: Ch 1, dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 1, skip 1 st, [3 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 3 sts] 3 times across row, 3 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in ch-2 sp. (14 sts + 5 ch-1 sp)
  • Row 2: Turn, sl st into first ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in same ch-1 sp, [ch 1, skip 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp] 3 times across row, ch 1, dc in next ch-1 sp, skip last dc. (11 sts + 4 ch-1 sp)
  • Row 3: Turn, sl st into first ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in same ch-1 sp, [ch 1, skip 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp] twice across row, ch 1, dc in next ch-1 sp, skip last dc. (8 sts + 3 ch-1 sp)  
  • Row 4: Turn, sl st into first ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in same ch-1 sp, ch 1, skip 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in next ch-1 sp, skip last dc. (5 sts + 2 ch-1 sp)
  • Row 5: Turn, sl st into first ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in same ch-1 sp, ch 1, place stitch marker in ch-1 sp just made, skip 3 sts, dc in next ch-1 sp, skip last dc. Fasten off CC. (2 sts + 1 ch-1 sp)
  • Rep from ✪ on next 3 sides of square.
  • With Right Side facing, join CB with sl st to any marked ch-1 sp at tip of Row 5. Begin working in the round.
  • Rnd 8: Ch 1, 3 dc in same st, *skip side of this stitch, 2 dc in side of next row, 3 dc in side of next 2 rows, 2 dc in side of next 2 rows (on current triangle and on next triangle), 3 dc in side of next 2 rows, 2 dc in side of next row,** skip side of next row, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next marked st; rep from * around twice more, rep from * to **, 3 dc in first st, ch 1, sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc to join. Do not fasten off CB. (104 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)

Pattern Instructions – Border Rounds

  • Continue crocheting in the round.
  • Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc in each st across to corner ch-2 sp,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch-2 sp; rep from * twice more, rep from * to **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st to first sc to join. Fasten off CB. (112 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • With Right Side facing, join CC with sl st to any ch-2. Continue working in the round.
  • Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, sc in next st, *ch 2, skip 2 sts, [sc in next 2 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts] across to st before corner ch-2 sp, sc in next st,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch-2 sp, sc in next st; rep from * twice more, rep from * to **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st to first sc to join. (64 sts + 32 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 11: Ch 1, dc in same st and in next st, *[ch 2, skip ch-2 sp, dc in next 2 sts] across row to corner ch-2 sp, ch 4, skip ch-2 sp,** dc in next 2 sts; rep from * twice more, rep from * to **, sl st to first dc to join. Fasten off CC. (64 sts + 28 ch-2 sp + 4 ch-4 sp)
  • With Right Side facing, join CA with sl st to next dc after any ch-4 sp. Continue working in the round.
  • Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in same st and next st, (see Pattern Notes)*[(working in front of ch-2 sp, cdc in next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 9), sc in next 2 sts] across to ch-4 sp, in ch-4 sp, work [2 sc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in skipped ch-2 sp on Rnd 9, 2 sc],** sc in next 2 sts; rep from * twice more, rep from * to **, sl st to first sc to join. (144 sts + 4 ch-1 sp)
  • Rnd 13: Ch 1, dc in same st and next st, *cdc, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * across to 3 sts before ch-1 sp, dc in next 3 sts, ch 2, skip ch-1 sp,** dc in next 5 sts; rep from * twice more, rep from * to **, dc in next 3 sts, sl st to first dc to join. Fasten off CA. (144 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)

Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in ends.
