There are a lot of Santa hat crochet patterns out there, but fewer are sack hats and not many include all the colors of Santa’s suit. When I was designing this pattern, I wanted to make something that was simple enough and available in enough sizes that it could be easily made into a matching gift set.

For larger sizes, you could substitute a brooch or pin for the crocheted Buckle. Or not, because it crochets up pretty quickly!

This is the twenty-first pattern in the 2020 sixth annual Holiday Stashdown Crochet Along with CAL Central. Join in with us!

  • Winding Road Crochet has a helpful tutorial for working single crochet around the edge here.
  • Change colors when joining Rounds with sl st. Colors B is used throughout the Hat Body and should be carried along the inside of the hat when not in use. When picking up color, be sure not to pull too tightly or hat will pucker. As other colors are fastened off, crochet over the yarn tails as you work. Fiber Flux has a helpful tutorial explaining how to do this here. For best results, point yarn tail ends towards inside of hat.
  • A helpful tutorial for seaming with the whipstitch is available here.
