Brushstrokes Beanie

I’m so excited to be participating in the Hat of the Month Crochet Along with The Stitchin’ Mommy and Oombawka Design Crochet again! My contribution for this month’s CAL is a simple crochet beanie pattern that alternates rows of herringbone double crochet with rows of single crochet to form a stitch pattern that slants like brushstrokes. The Brushstrokes Beanie pattern includes a video tutorial for the herringbone double crochet stitch.

I love joining Oombawka Design Crochet and The Stitchin’ Mommy for their annual Hat of the Month Crochet Along. Last week, I shared the Brushstrokes Scarf, and this week, I’m sharing the Brushstrokes Beanie.

Both patterns are made with King Cole Acorn Aran, a self-striping, tweedy acrylic and wool blend yarn. Acorn Aran is available from your local yarn shop or online at Wool Warehouse UK. I used 4955 Holly Berries for both patterns because I was in a Christmas in July mood.

Like the Brushstrokes Scarf, the Brushstrokes Beanie is a very simple crochet pattern to make. I’ve included one child size for free here on the blog, or you can get all 10 sizes from newborn through adult large on the premium PDF version.

Scroll down for the Brushstrokes Beanie pattern! As I mentioned before, this pattern is part of the Hat of the Month Crochet Along with Oombawka Design Crochet and The Stitchin’ Mommy.

Each month includes three free crochet hat patterns. Head over to Oombawka Design Crochet for the Wild Floret Hat pattern. Head over to The Stitchin’ Mommy for the Eleanor Beanie pattern. And, scroll down for the Brushstrokes Beanie pattern.

Pattern Notes

  • Ch 1 at start of rows does not count as a stitch.
  • This pattern is crocheted flat. The hat is then cinched closed and seamed. If you prefer to crochet in the round, join Hat Band with mattress stitch seam at shorter edges. Pick up stitches as indicated, then join with slip stitch to begin crocheting in the round. You will still need to turn each Round so that the stitch pattern will slant in the same direction.
  • A helpful tutorial for cinching the top of a slouchy hat closed is available here.
