Mélange Blanket Square 16: Breeze Block

Our sixteenth square pattern is the Breeze Block by Julie Yeager Designs. You can find Julie online at EtsyFacebook | Instagram | LoveCrafts | Pinterest | Ravelry

Julie’s version of the Breeze Block is made with two colors.

For my version, I used King Cole Big Value Aran, which is available through your local yarn shop or online at LoveCrafts or Wool Warehouse UK, and my Denise US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook. Using the same hook and yarn throughout this project helps me keep consistent gauge across all my squares. I used Ocean for Rounds 1-2, Berry for Round 3, Nougat for Round 4, and Berry for Round 5. I changed colors in the last slip stitch of each row, then skipped ahead to the first set of chains on the following Round. At the end of Round 4, my square was already close to 5.5″ (14 cm), so I changed Round 5 to make it a little shorter. I substituted double crochets for treble crochets in the corner, and I substituted single crochets for the double crochets around the block. I did keep the front post treble crochet stitches, but I didn’t raise my loops as high as the round was a tad shorter than Julie’s version. At the end of Round 5, my block was exactly 6″ (15 cm), so I skipped Round 6.

If you’re new to front post treble crochet stitches, I have a video tutorial below which you may find helpful.

(If you can’t see the video above demonstrating the front post treble crochet, click HERE to watch it on YouTube.) I then lightly spray blocked my square. (If you’re new to blocking, check out Blocking Basics for Crocheters and Knitters.)
