Pumpkin Jack in Overalls

Crochet Pumpkin Doll Pattern by Underground Crafter

This crochet pumpkin doll pattern is a quick make with little sewing so it makes a great last-minute gift or decoration. Pumpkin Jack is portable enough to be a carry-along friend! This is the eleventh pattern in the fifth annual Halloween Crochet Along with CAL Central.

Finished Size

  • Approximately 6” (15 cm) tall after stuffing.

Materials

Gauge

  • Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern. Stitches should be small so fiber filling doesn’t show.

  • If you can’t see the video above for the bobble, click here to watch it on Instagram.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • ch – chain
  • invdec – invisible decrease – Insert hook in front loop only of each of next 2 sts, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops. Planet June has a great invisible decrease tutorial here.

  • Oombawka Design has a helpful video tutorial for starting with the magic adjustable ring here.
  • When possible, crochet over yarn tails as shown in the video tutorial below.

Pattern Instructions

Head

  • With CA, start with magic adjustable ring (see Pattern Notes).
  • Rnd 1: (Right Side) Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, pull yarn tightly to close ring, pm in last st to mark position.  Move marker up each Rnd. (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2:  2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around. (18 sts)
  • Rnd 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] around. (24 sts)
  • Rnd 5: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts] around. (30 sts)
  • Rnd 6: Sc in each st around.
  • Rnd 7: [Invdec, sc in next 3 sts] around. (24 sts)
  • Rnd 8: [Invdec, sc in next 2 sts] around. (18 sts)

  • Rnd 10: Invdec around. (6 sts).
  • Remove marker, fasten off CA with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm) for seaming.
  • With yarn needle, weave in starting yarn tail for Head on inside. Stuff Head firmly with fiber filling.

First Leg

  • With CA, start with magic adjustable ring (see Pattern Notes).

  • With yarn needle, weave in starting yarn tail for First Leg on inside. Stuff First Leg firmly with fiber filling.
  • Rnd 6: Join CB with sl st to next st, fasten off CA. Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st around.
  • Rnds 7-9: Repeat Rnd 4, 3 times.
  • Remove marker, fasten off CB.

Second Leg

  • Repeat as for First Leg, but do not remove marker or fasten off.

Assemble Legs

  • Remove marker and pm in loop of last stitch so it doesn’t unravel. Remove crochet hook. (Tip: Use a different color stitch marker for this as shown in the photo below).
  • Skip 2 stitches on Second Leg and pm through next stitch on Second Leg and a stitch on the First Leg. Pm through next stitch on Second Leg and next stitch on First Leg. This will “pin” both legs together at adjacent stitches.
  • Remove first stitch marker and return crochet hook to loop.
  • Rnd 10: Sc in next 2 sts on Second Leg, sc through both sts on both Legs marked by next marker, remove marker, continue on outer edge of First Leg, sc in next 10 sts, sc through both sts on both Legs marked by next marker, remove marker, continue on outer edge of Second Leg, sc in next 8 sts, pm to mark last st. (24 sts)

Torso

  • Rnd 11: Sc in 22 sts around outer edge (skipping 2 joined sts at center of legs). (22 sts)
  • Rnd 12: Sc in each st around.
  • Rnd 13: [Invdec, sc in next 9 sts] twice. (20 sts)
  • Rnd 14: Repeat Rnd 12.
  • Rnd 15: [Invdec, sc in next 8 sts] twice. (18 sts)
  • Rnd 16: Repeat Rnd 12.
  • Rnd 17: [Invdec, sc in next 7 sts] twice. (16 sts)
  • Rnd 18: Repeat Rnd 12, fasten off CB.
  • Lay Legs and Torso flat. Pm in corner at one side, skip 7 sts, pm in corner at other side as shown in photo below.
  • Rnd 19: With Wrong Side facing (inside of the Torso), join CA with sl st to first corner marked st, ch 1, bob in same st, sc in next 7 sts, bob in next st, sc in next 7 sts, sl st to bob to join.
  • Rnd 20: Turn to Right Side, ch 1, invdec in next 2 sc, sc in next 6 sts, invdec, sc in next 6 sts. (14 sts)
  • Rnd 21: [Invdec, sc in next 5 sts] twice. (12 sts)
  • Remove marker and fasten off CA.
  • Stuff Legs and Torso firmly with fiber filling.

Attach Overall Straps

  • With Right Side facing, insert crochet hook in third CA stitch on Rnd 19 of Torso, join CB with sl st, ch 1, sc in same st (as shown in photos below), ch 7, join with sl st on other side of Torso, sc in same st, fasten off CB. Alternatively, use surface crochet or embroidery chain stitches (see Pattern Notes) to create straps.
  • Repeat on other side to form second strap of overalls.
  • With yarn needle, weave in all ends except for long yarn tail for seaming at end of Head. Thread yarn needle with CA from Head and whipstitch Head to Torso (see Pattern Notes), joining each stitch on the Head to 2 stitches on the Torso. When Head is firmly joined to Torso, weave remaining yarn tail in.

Decorate Face

  • With CC and yarn needle, decorate Face using embroidery stitches (see Pattern Notes). Weave in yarn tails on inside.
