The Perla Square is a 6 inch granny square pattern with a gentle floral center and a variety of textures. My version is made with three colors in King Cole Big Value Aran yarn.

Perla Square
6 Inch Granny Square Pattern by Underground Crafter



This 6 inch granny square pattern has a gentle floral look with a variety of textures. This is Square 39 of the Mélange Blanket Mystery Crochet Along.
Finished Size
- 6” (15 cm) square.
Materials
- King Cole Big Value Aran yarn (100% acrylic, 3 oz/100 g/257 yd/235 m) – 1 skein each in 3288 Nougat (CA), 3333 Berry (CB), and 3291 Ocean (CC), or approximately 42 yd (38.5 m) in each of 3 colors in any medium weight acrylic yarn.
- Denise US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to get gauge.
- Locking stitch marker set (optional, but helpful for marking the front and holding pieces together for seaming).
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Motif in pattern = 6” (15 cm) square. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop here.
- CA – Color A
- CB – Color B
- CC – Color C
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- dv-st – double v-stitch – (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same st or sp.
- pf – 3-repeat puff stitch – [Yo, insert hook into st, yo and draw up a loop] 3 times in same st, yo and draw through all 7 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is below.

- rep – repeat
- Rnd(s) – Round(s)
- sc – single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- yo – yarn over
- * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
Pattern Notes
- Entire pattern is crocheted in joined rounds with the right (front) side facing up.
- This video below demonstrates four ways to crochet into a chain space. I used the first method for this pattern.

- Moogly has a helpful video tutorial demonstrating the standing double crochet here. Alternatively, you can join with sl st and ch 3 (which will count as the first dc of the Round).
- This square may benefit from wet blocking. If you are new to blocking, you can find helpful descriptions and tutorials here.
Pattern Instructions
Motif
- With CA, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, [(dv-st, ch 2) into ring] 4 times, join with sl st to first dc. Fasten off CA. – 5 sts (4 dc + 1 ch-1 sp)/side + 4 ch-2 sp
- Rnd 2: Join CB with standing dc in any corner ch-2 sp (see Pattern Notes), 2 dc in same sp, [*skip 2 sts, dv-st in next ch-1 sp, skip 2 sts,** (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, 3 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc. Fasten off CB. – 11 sts (10 dc + 1 ch-1 sp)/side + 4 ch-2 sp
- Rnd 3: Join CA with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same st, [*scBL in next 5 sts, sc in ch-1 sp, scBL in next 5 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-1 sp] 3 times, rep from * to ** once, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with slstBL to first sc. – 13 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp
- Rnd 4: Ch 1, starting in same st [scBL in next 13 sts, (ch 1, pf, ch 1) in next ch-2 sp] 4 times, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off CA. – 13 sts on each side + 8 ch-1 sp + 4 pf
- Rnd 5: Join CC with sl st to any corner pf, ch 1, pf in same st, *dc in next ch-1 sp, [ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st] 6 times, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next ch-1 sp,** (pf, ch 2, pf) in next pf st; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, pf in first pf, ch 2, join with sl st to first pf. Fasten off CC. – 17 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp
- Rnd 6: Join CA with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *sc in next st, [sc in next st, dc in skipped st from Rnd 5] 7 times, sc in next 2 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st to join to first sc. – 19 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp
- If your square is smaller than 6” (15 cm) after Rnd 6, work additional rounds as follows until square reaches 6” (15 cm):
- Ch 1, sc in same ch-2 sp, *sc in each st across to corner ch-2 sp,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as ch 1) to top of first sc. (Increases by 2 sts on each side with each rep)
- Fasten off.
Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in ends on wrong side of square.
