Bridget Floral Granny Square

Floral Granny Square Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

This floral granny square uses simple stitches and is a beginner-friendly pattern. This is Square 42 of the Mélange Blanket Mystery Crochet Along.

Finished Size

  • 6” (15 cm) square.

Materials

  • King Cole Big Value Aran yarn (100% acrylic, 3 oz/100 g/257 yd/235 m) – 1 skein each in 3288 Nougat (CA), 3333 Berry (CB), and 3291 Ocean (CC), or approximately 42 yd (38.5 m) in each of 3 colors in any medium weight acrylic yarn.
  • Denise US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to get gauge.
  • Locking stitch marker set (optional, but helpful for marking the front and holding pieces together for seaming).
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Motif in pattern = 6” (15 cm) square. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • FL – front loop only – Oombawka Design Crochet has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop here.
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
  • () Work stitches between parentheses into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • Entire pattern is crocheted in joined rounds with the right (front) side facing up.
  • Ch 1 at start of Rounds and sl st at end of Rounds do NOT count as stitches.
  • This video below demonstrates four ways to crochet into a chain space. I used the first method for this pattern.

Pattern Instructions

Motif

  • With CA, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Round 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, join with slstFL to first sc. – 6 sts
  • Round 2: Ch 1, starting in first st [scFL, ch 2] around, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off CA. – 6 sts + 6 ch-2 sp
  • Round 3: Join CB with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, starting in same ch-2 sp [(sc, 4 hdc, sc) in next ch-2 sp, skip sc] 6 times, join with sl st to first sc. – 6 petals (36 sts)
  • Round 4: SlstBL to unworked back loop below current st in Round 2, ch 1, 2scBL in each st from Round 2, join with sl st to first sc. – 12 sts
  • Round 5:. Ch 1, starting in first st [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around, join CC with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. – 18 sts
  • Round 6: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. – 24 sts
  • Round 7: Ch 1, 2 dc in first st, *dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat after **, 2 dc in first st, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc. Fasten off CC. – 9 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp
  • Round 8: Join CA with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 sc in same sp, *[sc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st] 4 times, sc in next st,** (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat after **, 2 sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA. – 13 sts (9 sc + 4 ch-1 sp)/side + 4 ch-2 sp
  • Round 9: Join CC with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *dc in next 3 sts, [dc in skipped st from previous Round (bringing st to the same height as current Round), dc in next st on current Round] 4 times, dc in next 2 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat after **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc. Fasten off CC. – 17 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp
  • Round 10: Join CA with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *scBL in next 17 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat after **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with slstBL to first sc. – 19 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp
  • Round 11: Ch 1, scBL in same st and next 18 sts, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp, [scBL in next 19 sts, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp] 3 times, join with sl st to first sc. – 19 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp
  • If your square is smaller than 6” (15 cm) after Round 11, work additional rounds as follows until square reaches 6” (15 cm):
    • Ch 1, *sc in each st across to corner ch-2 sp,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat after **, join with sl st to first sc. (Increases by 2 sts on each side with each rep)
  • Fasten off CA.

Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in ends on wrong side of square.
