Crochet Pattern: Lucinda Square

Mock Bobble Granny Square Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

This mock bobble granny square has just the right amount of texture. This is Square 46 of the Mélange Blanket Mystery Crochet Along.

Finished Size

  • 6” (15 cm) square.

Materials

  • King Cole Big Value Aran yarn (100% acrylic, 3 oz/100 g/257 yd/235 m) – 1 skein each in 3288 Nougat (CA), 3333 Berry (CB), and 3291 Ocean (CC), or approximately 42 yd (38.5 m) in each of 3 colors in any medium weight acrylic yarn.
  • Denise US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to get gauge.
  • Locking stitch marker set (optional, but helpful for marking the front and holding pieces together for seaming).
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Motif in pattern = 6” (15 cm) square. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • FPsc – front post single crochet – Insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • hdc – half double crochet
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • tr – treble (triple) crochet – Haven’t worked a treble crochet in a while? The video below shares a refresher on the basic crochet stitches.

  • yo – yarn over
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
  • () Work stitches between parentheses into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • Entire pattern is crocheted in joined rounds with the right (front) side facing up.
  • Ch 1 at start of Rounds and sl st at end of Rounds do NOT count as stitches.
  • This video below demonstrates four ways to crochet into a chain space. I used the first method for this pattern.

  • This square may benefit from wet blocking. If you are new to blocking, you can find helpful descriptions and tutorials here.

Pattern Instructions

Motif

  • With CA, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join CB with sl st to first dc. Fasten off CA. – 12 sts
  • Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join CA with sl st to first sc. Fasten off CB. – 24 sts
  • Rnd 3: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc. Fasten off CA. – 36 sts
  • Rnd 4: Join CC with standing sc (see Pattern Notes) to any st, tr in same st, sc in next st, tr in next st, [(sc, tr) in next st, sc in next st, tr in next st] around, join with sl st to first sc. – 48 sts
  • Rnd 5:. Ch 1, starting in first st [sc in next sc, FPsc around next tr] around, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off CC.
  • Rnd 6: Join CA with standing dc (see Pattern Notes) to any sc, dc in same st, *dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat after **, 2 dc in first st, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc. Fasten off CA. – 15 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp
  • Rnd 7: Join CB with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *scBL in next 15 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat after **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off CB. – 17 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp
  • Rnd 8: Join CC with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *scBL in next 17 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat after **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc. – 19 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp
  • If your square is smaller than 6” (15 cm) after Rnd 8, work additional rounds as follows until square reaches 6” (15 cm):
    • Ch 1, *sc in each st across to corner ch-2 sp,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat after **, join with sl st to first sc. (Increases by 2 sts on each side with each rep)
  • Fasten off CC.

Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in ends on wrong side of square.
