Just before the end of 2023, I came across a big online yarn sale at JOANN and decided to try out a new-to-me yarn, Eddie Bauer Cozy Camp. The description explained it was a 100% recycled yarn with a “mouline effect.” Of course, I had no idea what that meant so I had to do a little internet sleuthing. It turns out that that the mouline effect is produced when you ply a yarn with a colored strand and a white strand.

I’m glad I took advantage of the sale to try it out because I’d definitely buy Cozy Camp again. It’s very soft and the colors are great. And, yes, the mouline effect is wonderful, too. It gives the yarn a bit of complexity in appearance, so it is ideal for simple stitch patterns.

For this pocket scarf crochet pattern, I wanted to add hearts because the Scarlet yarn is so beautiful and was just calling out to become a heart. This pattern is fairly easy peasy, but you do need to keep track of row counts if you’d like to use the same striping pattern that I did.

Assembly and Finishing

  • The pockets will fold over at Rows 18 and Row 160.
  • Before seaming pockets, you will attach the Heart Motifs to each pocket. To be sure you are working on the correct side, fold the first pocket over. Position first Heart Motif on first pocket, with bumps facing the top of the pocket and the point facing the fold. Pin into position using locking stitch markers or pins (optional). Unfold pocket (so you don’t seam through both layers).
  • Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail from end of Heart Motif. With yarn needle, attach Heart Motif to pocket using whipstitch seam (see Pattern Notes). With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail on inside of pocket. Repeat with second Heart Motif on second pocket.
  • Fold over first pocket again. Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail from end of Row 35.
  • Working along first long edge of pocket, join pocket edge with mattress stitch seam (see video below).
  • If you can’t see the video above demonstrating how to seam with the mattress stitch, click HERE to watch it on YouTube.
  • With yarn needle, weave yarn through inside of pocket to other edge.
  • Join second long edge of pocket with mattress stitch seam. Weave in yarn tail on inside of pocket. Repeat with second pocket using yarn tail from end of Row 178.
  • Spray block scarf if necessary (see Pattern Notes).
