This Month’s Featured Organization: The Remissionaries

The Remissionaries is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded by a breast cancer survivor that provides Comfort Crates to women going through treatment for breast cancer. The Remissionaries partners with Crafting Change to share their updated needs for handmade items to include in Comfort Crates.

As of this writing, the Remissionaries accepts a range of handmade donations, including crochet, knit, and sewn projects such as port pillows, tissue holders, lapghans and quilts, tote bags, heating pads, beanies (“chemo caps”), and soft scalp washing pads.

You can find current needs, the project overview sheet explaining the parameters for donation, shipping instructions, and links to free patterns on the Crafting Change page for The Remissionaries.

How To Make Soft Scalp Washing Pads

Soft scalp washing pads are very similar to crochet cotton face pads, but they are used by people experiencing traumatic hair loss. Therefore, there are a few additional requirements so that people can use them to wash their sensitive skin while limiting exposure to harsh chemicals.

  • Soft scalp washing pads must be made from organic 100% cotton yarn.
  • Soft scalp washing pads should be made with undyed yarn or yarn dyed with a pale color.

About the Set of Crochet Cotton Face Pads

I was inspired to design three patterns that could be used as soft scalp washing pads. The Lovely Day Face Pad is designed using Appalachian Baby U.S. Organic Cotton Sport, the Beautiful Morning Face Pad is designed using two strands of Appalachian Baby U.S. Organic Cotton Sport yarn held together (equivalent to using a medium weight yarn), and the Wake Up Face Pad is designed using Appalachian Baby U.S. Organic Cotton Chunky yarn.
