Simple Cable Knit Hat Pattern: Jupiter Beanie

Today’s pattern for the Jupiter Beanie is a simple cable knit hat pattern. This pattern combines the seed stitch with a central cable for a dramatic texture. It’s beginner friendly and is knit flat and then seamed.

For this pattern, I used King Cole Big Value Super Chunky Stormy yarn. This is is a marled yarn that has beautifully subtle color effects.

I used one colorway for the hat band, and a different colorway for the rest of the hat.

I designed this simple cable knit hat with a central cable against a seed stitch background. To make the pattern more beginner friendly, I recommend putting stitch markers around the cable section so you don’t have to focus as much on stitch counts.

Finished Size

  • Teen/Adult: 18” (45.5 cm) hat circumference x 9” (23 cm) height before blocking.

Materials

  • King Cole Big Value Super Chunky Stormy yarn (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz/100 g, 88 yd/81 m) – 1 skein each in 4106 Thunder (CA) and 4110 Sleet (CB), or approximately 45 yd (41 m) in CA and 80 yd (73 m) in CB in any super bulky weight yarn.
  • US Size 15/10 mm knitting needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • US Size 13/9 mm knitting needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Locking stitch markers.
  • Cable needle.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • 14 sts = 4.5” (11.5 cm) in seed stitch pattern. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BO – bind off
  • C4F – 4-stitch left-leaning cable – Slip 4 sts to cn, hold cn at front, k2, k2 from cn. King Cole has a helpful video tutorial for this type of cable here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • cn – cable needle
  • k – knit
  • k2tog – knit 2 stitches together (decrease) – AllFreeKnitting has a helpful video tutorial demonstrating the k2tog decrease here.

  • p2tog – purl 2 stitches together (decrease) – AllFreeKnitting has a helpful video tutorial demonstrating the p2tog decrease here.
  • pm – place stitch marker
  • rep – repeat
  • RS – right (front) side
  • sl – slip stitch knitwise
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • WS – wrong (back) side
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.

Gauge Swatch

  • To work gauge swatch, cast on 14 sts with larger needle.
  • Row 1: Sl1, [k1, p1] across to last st, p1.
  • Row 2: Sl1, p1, [k1, p1] across.
  • Rep Rows 1-2 until swatch measures approximately 4” (10 cm) long. BO. For best fit, always check your gauge.
  • Your stitches should create a firm fabric that isn’t stiff, but doesn’t have holes or gaps between stitches. Pin your swatch flat without stretching to measure.
  • If your swatch is much wider than 4.5” (11.5 cm), your stitches may be too large. You may want to go down a needle size to a US Size 13/9 mm needle. You will also need a second set of needles that is 1 size smaller than the needle size you choose to be your larger needle.
  • If your swatch is much narrower than 4.5” (11.5 cm), your stitches may be too small. You may want to go up a needle size to a US Size 17/12 mm needle. You will also need a second set of needles that is 1 size smaller than the needle size you choose to be your larger needle.

Pattern Notes

  • I used the Long-Tail Cast On. Very Pink Knits has a helpful video tutorial demonstrating this cast on here.
  • If you have difficulty “reading” your stitches, place a locking stitch marker on the front of Row 1 to mark the right/front side.
  • For the Work Even section, stitch markers or scrap yarn are moved up each round to mark position of cable.
