This Month’s Featured Organization: Project Legacy Shawls

Project Legacy Shawls is a Ravelry group that collects handmade items to distribute in the palliative care unit at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. The handmade donations comfort patients during their end-of-life care and then are given to families to provide comfort during the grieving process. As of this writing, Project Legacy Shawls accepts a range of handmade donations, including prayer shawls, lap robes, lapghans, and pocket prayer shawls/comfort cloths.

You can find current needs, the parameters for donation, shipping instructions and drop off locations, and the option for chatting with other crocheters and knitters in the Project Legacy Shawls Ravelry group homepage.

Tips for Making Prayer Shawls for Donation

Prayer shawls are shawls that are intended to provide comfort and are made intentionally. While the maker may not necessarily be praying, the idea is to infuse positive thoughts into the shawl as you make it so that those feelings of comfort can be passed along to the recipient.

Project Legacy Shawls accepts shawls of any shape or style, but shawls must be large enough to wrap around the shoulders. The recommended size is 50″ (127 cm) to 74” (188 cm) width/wingspan and 15″ (38 cm) to 20” (51 cm) depth/spine. Using an easy

About the Sawyer Shawl

I was inspired to design this easy prayer shawl crochet pattern when I first saw Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick yarn at JOANN. This color seemed to me perfect for people of any gender and because I know that Project Legacy Shawls has a need for gender-neutral shawls and shawls for men.

I think prayer shawl patterns should be simple to make so the crocheter can focus on positive thoughts while crocheting. Classic styles that provide comfort and keep the recipients warm in hospitals and other settings that are often air conditioned or cold work best.
