Baby Shower Sack Hat Crochet Pattern

I’m joining the Baby Shower Blog Hop with Ambassador Crochet with the textured Baby Shower Sack Hat crochet pattern. This works up quickly to make a great last-minute baby shower gift. I used a soft, chenille-type yarn which is perfect for little heads! The pattern is available in four infant sizes.

Crochet Sack Hat Pattern by Underground Crafter

This textured crochet sack hat pattern works up quickly and makes a great last-minute baby shower gift! A soft chenille-type yarn makes this perfect for little heads.     ­­     

Finished Sizes

  • Newborn (0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months). Photographed sample is size Newborn.
    • Newborn: 12” (30.5 cm) hat circumference x 5.25” (13.5 cm) height.
    • 0-3 Months: 14″ (35.5 cm) hat circumference x 6.5” (16.5 cm) height.
    • 3-6 Months: 15” (38 cm) hat circumference x 6.75″ (17 cm) height.
    • 6-12 Months: 16″ (40.5 cm) hat circumference x 7” (18 cm) height.

Materials

  • Lion Brand Chenille Appeal yarn (100% polyester, 3.5 oz/100 g, 260 yd/284 m) – 1 skein in 099Z Coconut Milk, or approximately 76 yd (105 yd, 120 yd, 130 yd)/69.5 m (96 m, 110 m, 119 m) in any medium weight polyester yarn.
  • US Size 7/4.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • 6 sts in pattern for Hat Band = 1.25” (3 cm) across with smaller hook. For best fit, always check your gauge.
  • 14 sts in pattern for Work Even = 4” (10 cm) across with larger hook. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • 3L – third (back) loop only – The video below helps you identify the third loop in half double crochet.

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • ea – each
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • pf – 3-repeat puff stitch – [Yo, insert hook into st, yo and draw up a loop] 3 times in same st, yo and draw through all 7 loops on hook. A video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • yo – yarn over
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.

Pattern Instructions

Hat Band

  • With smaller hook, ch 7 (7, 7, 7).
  • Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, hdc in next 6 ch. (6 sts)
  • Row 2:  Turn, ch 1, hdc3L in first st and ea st across.
  • Rep Row 2 until Hat Band measures 12” (14”, 15”, 16”)/30.5 cm (35.5 cm, 38 cm, 40.5 cm) or desired hat circumference. Do not fasten off.
  • Fold Hat Band so that short edges are aligned, being careful not to twist. Ch 1, join short edge with slip stitch seam (see video below). Do not fasten off.

Work Even

  • Set Up Round: Working along long edge, ch 1 and evenly pick up 40 (48, 52, 54) sc around (see video below), join with sl st to first sc. – 40 (48, 52, 54) sts

  • Rnd 1: Switch to larger hook. Ch 1, starting in first st [sc in next st, pf in next st] around, join with sl st to first sc.
  • Rnd 2: Ch 1, dc in first st and ea st around.
  • Rep Rnds 1-2 until hat measures approximately 5.25” (6.5”, 6.75”, 7”)/(13.5 cm, 16.5 cm, 17 cm, 18 cm) height, ending after Rnd 2. Do not fasten off.
  • Lay hat flat with seam at one side. Join with slip stitch seam (see Pattern Notes) across final row. Fasten off.

Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on inside of hat.
