I’m sharing the Constance Floral Granny Square, the first of nine 12″ floral granny square patterns in the Welcoming Blanket Mystery Crochet Along. Welcoming Blanket 1: Constance Floral Granny Square

Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

Constance is the first floral granny square in the Welcoming Blanket, a mystery crochet along for a 40″ x 40″ throw blanket made up of nine 12” floral granny square patterns with borders. The pattern uses a similar beginning to the 6” Forget-me-not Square.

Finished Size

  • 12” (30.5 cm) square.

Materials for the Welcoming Blanket

  • Caron One Pound (available at Mary Maxim | Amazon) yarn (100% acrylic, 16 oz/454 g/812 yd/742 m) – 1 skein each in 02005 Sun Yellow (CA), 10517 Rose (CB), and 10620 Grass Green (CC), or approximately 812 yd/742 m in each of 3 medium weight yarns.
    • The Constance Floral Granny Square uses approximately 55 yd (50.5 m) in CA, 60 yd (55 m) in CB, and 50 yd (45.5 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn. 
  • Clover Amour (available at WeCrochet | Amazon) US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Completed Motif = 12” (30.5 cm) square. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Moogly has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop in crochet here.
  • bob – 3-repeat bobble – [Yo, insert hook into st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] 3 times in the same st, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

  • CB – Color B

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • RS – right (front) side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • tr – treble crochet
  • WS – wrong (back) side
  • yo – yarn over
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisks as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
  • () Work stitches between parentheses into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. I used the first method shown in the video below in this pattern.

  • Ch 1 at start of Rows and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.

Pattern Instructions

Motif

  • With CA, ch 4, skip first 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Rnd 1: (WS) Ch 1, [bob, ch 1] 5 times in ring, join with sl st to first bob, fasten off CA. (5 sts + 5 ch-1 sp)
  • Rnd 2: Turn to RS, join CB with sl st to any ch-1 sp, ch 1, starting in same st [sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, skip bob] around, join with sl st to first sc. (5 sc + 5 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 3: [(Sc, hdc, dc, ch 1, dc, hdc, sc) in next ch-3 sp, skip sc] around. (35 sts/5 petals)
  • Rnd 4: [Sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, (tr, ch 1, tr) in ch-1 sp, dc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (45 sts/5 petals)
  • Rnd 5: With RS facing and working behind petals, join CC with sl st to any skipped bob on Rnd 2, ch 1, 4 dc in same st, [5 dc in next skipped st on Rnd 2] around, join with sl st to first dc. (24 sts)
  • Rnd 6: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc. (36 sts)
  • Rnd 7: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts)
  • Rnd 8: Ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first st, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (15 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 9: Ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *dc in next 15 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st first dc, fasten off CC. (19 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 10: With RS facing, join CA with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *sc in next st, [skip 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st] across to ch-2 sp,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (23 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 11: With RS facing, join CB with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, dc in same sp, *sc in next st, skip 1 st, [5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts] across to last 5 sts, skip 2 sts, 5 dc in next sc, skip 1 st, sc in next st,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CB. (27 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 12: With RS facing, join CC with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *[hdc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 3 sts] across to last 3 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CC. (29 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 13: With RS facing, join CA with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, dc in same sp, *dc in next 29 sts,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc. (31 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 14:Ch 1, starting in same st *[dc in next st, ch 1, skip next st] across to last st, dc in next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (35 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 15: With RS facing, join CB with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *scBL in next 3 sts, [dc in next skipped st on Rnd 13, scBL in next st] across to last 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc. (37 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 16: Ch 1, starting in same st [hdc in each st across, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp] around, join with sl st to first hdc, fasten off CB.

Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on WS of square.
