Welcoming Blanket 2: Linda Floral Granny Square

Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

Linda is the second floral granny square in the Welcoming Blanket, a mystery crochet along for a 40″ x 40″ throw blanket made up of nine 12” floral granny square patterns with borders. The Linda pattern has a layered 6-petal flower at the center.

Finished Size

  • 12” (30.5 cm) square.

Materials for the Welcoming Blanket

  • Caron One Pound (available at Mary Maxim | Amazon) yarn (100% acrylic, 16 oz/454 g/812 yd/742 m) – 1 skein each in 02005 Sun Yellow (CA), 10517 Rose (CB), and 10620 Grass Green (CC), or approximately 812 yd/742 m in each of 3 medium weight yarns.
    • The Linda Floral Granny Square uses approximately 40 yd (36.5 m) in CA, 90 yd (82.5 m) in CB, and 80 yd (73 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn. 
  • Clover Amour (available at WeCrochet | Amazon) US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Through Rnd 10 in pattern = 6” (15 cm) square. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Moogly has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop in crochet here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • FL – front loop only – Moogly has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the front loop in crochet here.
  • FPsc – front post single crochet – Insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • hdc – half double crochet
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • tr – treble crochet
  • yo – yarn over
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisks as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
  • () Work stitches between parentheses into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • Entire project is crocheted in the round with the right (front) side facing up.
  • There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. I used the first method shown in the video below in this pattern.

  • Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.

Pattern Instructions

Motif

  • With CA, ch 4, skip first 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Round 1: Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (12 sts)
  • Round 2: Join CB with sl st to any st, ch 1, starting in same st [sc in next st, ch 3, skip 1 st] around, join with sl st to first sc.
  • Round 3: [(Sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in next ch-3 sp, skip sc] around. (42 sts/6 petals)
  • Round 4: [ScFL in skipped st on Round 1, ch 4] 6 times, sl st to first ch-4 sp. (6 sc + 6 ch-4 sp)
  • Round 5: [(Sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc) in next ch-4 sp, skip sc] around, sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (54 sts/6 petals)
  • Round 6: Join CC with slstBL in any scFL from Round 4, ch 1, 4 dcBL in same st and each st on Round 4, join with sl st to first dc. (24 sts)
  • Round 7: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc. (36 sts)
  • Round 8: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts)
  • Round 9: Ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first st, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (15 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 10: Ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *dc in next 15 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st first dc, fasten off CC. (19 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 11: Join CA with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *[sc in next st, tr in next st] 9 times, sc in next st,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc. (21 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 12:Ch 1, *sc in first 2 sts, [FPsc around next tr, sc in next sc] across to last st, sc in next st, (sc, ch 2, sc); repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA. (23 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 13: Join CB with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *[sc in next st, tr in next st] 11 times, sc in next st,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc. (25 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 14: : Ch 1, *sc in first 2 sts, [FPsc around next tr, sc in next sc] across to last st, sc in next st, (sc, ch 2, sc); repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (27 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 15: Join CC with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *dc in next 27 sts, ** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc. (31 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 16: Ch 1, starting in same st *dc in next 31 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CC. (35 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 17: Join CA with sl st to any st after ch-2 sp, ch 1, starting in same st *[sc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st] across to last st, sc in next st, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA.
  • Round 18: Join CB with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *[scBL in next st, working over ch-1 sp and drawing loop up to height of current row, hdc in skipped st on Round 16] across to last st, scBL in next st,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first ch-2sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (37 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on wrong (back) side of square.
