Crochet Pattern: Inez Floral Granny Square

I’m sharing the Inez Floral Granny Square as the thirteenth block of the tenth annual Moogly Crochet Along.

Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

Inez is the thirteenth block in the 2024 Moogly Crochet Along.

Finished Size

  • 12” (30.5 cm) square.

Materials

  • Caron One Pound (available at Mary Maxim | Amazon) yarn (100% acrylic, 16 oz/454 g/812 yd/742 m) – 1 skein each in 02005 Sun Yellow (CA), 10517 Rose (CB), and 10620 Grass Green (CC), or approximately 36 yd (33 m) in CA, 66 yd (60.5 m) in CB, and 84 yd (77 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
  • Clover Amour (available at WeCrochet | Amazon) US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • Through Rnd 10 in pattern = 6.5” (16.5 cm). Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Moogly has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the back loop in crochet here.
  • bob – 3-repeat bobble – [Yo, insert hook into st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] 3 times in the same st, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial is available below.

  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • FL – front loop only – Moogly has a helpful video tutorial for identifying the front loop in crochet here.
  • FPsc – front loop single crochet – front post single crochet = Insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops. A helpful video tutorial is available below.

  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • RS – right (front) side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • WS – wrong (back) side
  • yo – yarn over
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisks as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
  • () Work stitches between parentheses into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. I used the first method shown in the video below in this pattern.

  • Ch 1 at start of Rows and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.

Pattern Instructions

Motif

  • With CA, ch 4, skip first 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Rnd 1: (RS) Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc. (12 sts)
  • Rnd 2: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st [(bob, sc) in each st] around, join with sl st to first bob. (24 sts)
  • Rnd 3: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st [FPsc around next bob, sc in next sc] around, join with sl st to first FPsc, fasten off CA.
  • Rnd 4: Join CB on RS of Rnd 3 with slstFL to any st, [*ch 3, skip 1 st,** slstFL in next st] 11 times, repeat from * to ** once, join with sl st to first ch-3 sp. (12 ch-3 sp)
  • Rnd 5: (RS) [(Sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) in ch-3 sp, skip sl st] around, join with slstBL to first sl st on Rnd 4. (12 petals/60 sts)
  • Rnd 6: (RS) Starting in same st [(ScBL, 4 dcBL, scBL) in unworked BL of next sl st behind petals on Rnd 4] around, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (12 petals/72 sts)
  • Rnd 7: Join CC on RS behind petals on Rnd 6 with slstBL to any unworked BL on Rnd 3, ch 1, starting in same st [3 dcBL, skip petal] around, sl st to first dc to join. (36 sts)
  • Rnd 8: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts)
  • Rnd 9: (RS) Ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first st, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (15 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 10: (RS) Ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *dc in next 15 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st first dc, fasten off CC. (19 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 11: Join CA on RS with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *[dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st] across side to last st, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (23 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 12: Join CB on RS with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 sc in same sp, *scBL in next 3 sts, [working over ch-1 sp and drawing loop up to height of current row, dc in skipped st on Rnd 10, scBL in next st on Rnd 11] across side to last 2 sts, scBL in next 2 sts,** (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 sc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc. (27 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 13:  (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st *[dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st] across side to last st, dc in next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CB. (31 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 14: Join CA on RS with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 sc in same sp, *scBL in next 3 sts, [working over ch-1 sp and drawing loop up to height of current row, dc in skipped st on Rnd 12, scBL in next st on Rnd 13] across side to last 2 sts, scBL in next 2 sts,** (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 sc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA. (35 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 15: Join CC on RS with sl st to any st after ch-2 sp, ch 1, starting in same st [dc in each st across side, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp] around, join with sl st to first dc.
  • Rnd 16: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st [sc in next 2 sts, bob in next st, sc in next 2 sts across side, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp] around, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CC.
  • Rnd 17: Join CA on RS with sl st to any ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, [scBL in next 2 sts, FPsc around next bob, scBL in next 2 sts across side],** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA.

Finishing

  • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on WS of square.
