Welcoming Blanket 9: Clara Floral Granny Square
Crochet Pattern by Underground Crafter

Clara is the ninth floral granny square in the Welcoming Blanket, a mystery crochet along for a 40″ x 40″ throw blanket made up of nine 12” floral granny square patterns with borders. The Clara pattern has 4-petal flowers at the center which are inspired by the petals on the Basket of Posies Clutch.
Finished Size
- 12” (30.5 cm) square.
Materials for the Welcoming Blanket
- Caron One Pound (available at Mary Maxim | Amazon) yarn (100% acrylic, 16 oz/454 g/812 yd/742 m) – 1 skein each in 02005 Sun Yellow (CA), 10517 Rose (CB), and 10620 Grass Green (CC), or approximately 812 yd/742 m in each of 3 medium weight yarns.
- The Clara Floral Granny Square uses approximately 55 yd (50.5 m) in CA, 65 yd (59.5 m) in CB, and 55 yd (50.5 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
- Clover Amour (available at WeCrochet | Amazon) US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Motif = 4” (10 cm) square after Round 6 in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful video tutorial demonstrating how to identify the back loop here.
- CA – Color A
- CB – Color B
- CC – Color C
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. A helpful photo tutorial for this stitch is available here.
- hdc – half double crochet
- RS – right (front) side
- sc – single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- WS – wrong (back) side
- yo – yarn over
- * Repeat instructions after asterisks as indicated.
- [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
- () Work stitches between parentheses into same stitch or space.
Pattern Notes
- Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.
- There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. I used the third method shown in this video for Round 2 (starts at 4:17) and I used the first method shown in this video for the rest of this pattern.

Pattern Instructions
Motif
Center Square – Flower (Make 2 with CA and 2 with CB)
- Ch 4, skip first 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Round 1: (RS) [Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 3, sl st in ring] 4 times. (4 petals/8 dc + 8 ch-3 sp + 4 sl st)

- Round 2: (RS) [ScBL in next 3 ch (see Pattern Notes), scBL in next 2 dc, scBL in next 3 ch, skip sl st] 4 times, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off current color. (32 sts)

Center Square – Base (Using the color NOT used for the flower, make 2 with CA and 2 with CB)
- Round 3: (RS) Join next color with sl st behind petals to any skipped sl st on Round 1, working behind petals, [ch 4, sl st to next sl st] 3 times, ch 4, sl st to first ch-4 sp. (4 ch-4 sp + 4 sl st)

- Round 4: (RS) Ch 1, 6 dc in each ch-4 sp around, join with sl st to first dc. (24 sts)

- Round 5: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc. (36 sts)

- Round 6: (RS) Ch 1, dc in same st, *dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in first st, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off current color. (40 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Join Center Squares using slip stitch seam (see video below) as follows.

- Position 2 squares with opposite coloring (as shown in photo) with RS together, join CA in ch-2 sp on WS, working through both layers, work sl st seam across 10 sts, sl st into ch-2 sp. Repeat with next pair of squares. Join 2 rows of squares by positioning squares with opposing coloring (as shown in photo) with RS together, join CA in corner ch-2 sp on WS, working through both layers, work sl st seam across 10 sts, sl st into next 2 ch-2 sp, work sl st seam across 10 sts, sl st to ch-2 sp, fasten off CA.

Outer Square
- Round 7: (RS) Join CC with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, *[dc in next 10 sts, dc in next ch-2 sp, dc2tog in same and next ch-2 sp, dc in second ch-2 sp, dc in next 10 sts] across,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 sp; rpeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CC. (27 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 8: (RS) Join CA with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *scBL in next 27 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA. (29 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 9: (RS) Join CB with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, dc in same sp, *dcBL in next 29 sts,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sl st first dc, fasten off CB. (31 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 10: (RS) Join CC with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *dcBL in next 31 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first sp, ch 2, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (35 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)

- Round 11: (RS) Ch 1, sc in same sp, *scBL in next 35 sts,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CC. (37 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on WS of square.
