Crochet Rolled Brim Hat Pattern: Lorena Beanie in 5 Sizes

Over the summer, I visited a charity knitting group at the South Burlington Library called Knit For Your Neighbors. The focus was on crocheting or knitting hats or scarves to donate locally. I started the sample for the Lorena Beanie during the group and then finished it up on the bus ride home. I designed the pattern so that it wasn’t too boring to make, but it was also simple enough that I could keep chatting with the other folks in the group. I used the rest of the skein of Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice from last fall’s Pumpkin Jack in Overalls pattern.

Crochet Rolled Brim Hat pattern by Underground Crafter

This textured crochet rolled brim beanie pattern is available in 5 sizes from preemie through adult large.

Finished Sizes

• Preemie (Newborn, Infant/Toddler, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Large). Photographed sample is Teen/Adult Small.
  • Preemie: 8.75” (22 cm) hat circumference x 3.5” (9 cm) height.
  • Newborn: 12.5” (32 cm) hat circumference x 5” (13 cm) height.
  • Infant/Toddler: 16.5” (42 cm) hat circumference x 6.75” (17 cm) height.
  • Teen/Adult Small: 20.5” (52 cm) hat circumference x 7.5” (19 cm) height.

Materials

• Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn (available at Lion Brand | LoveCrafts | Amazon) (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz/100 g/170 yd/156 m) – 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) skein(s) in 134A Terracotta, or approximately 35 yd (65 yd, 115 yd, 160 yd, 210 yd)/32 m (59.5 m, 105 m, 146.5m, 192m) in any medium weight acrylic or wool yarn.
• US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
• Yarn needle.

Gauge

• Through Rnd 3 in pattern = 4” (10 cm) diameter. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

• BL – back loop only – Rich Textures Crochet has a helpful video demonstrating how to identify the back loop in crochet here.
• ch – chain
• dc – double crochet
• FPsc – front post single crochet – Insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

• pf – 3-repeat puff stitch – [Yo, insert hook into st, yo and draw up a loop] 3 times in same st, yo and draw through all 7 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

• sl st – slip stitch

Beanie – All Sizes

• Starting at crown, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to first ch to form ring.
• Round 1: Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc. (12 sts)
• Round 2: Ch 1, 2 dc in first st and each st around, join with sl st to first dc. (24 sts) PREEMIE SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
• Round 3: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc. (36 sts) NEWBORN SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
• Round 4: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts) INFANT/TODDLER SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
• Round 5: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (60 sts) TEEN/ADULT SMALL SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
• Round 6: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (72 sts) ADULT LARGE SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.

Work Even – All Sizes

• Work Even Round 1: Ch 1, starting in first st [sc in next st, pf in next st] around, join with sl st to first sc.
• Work Even Round 2: Ch 1, starting in first st [sc in next st, FPsc around next pf] around, join with sl st to first sc.
• Work Even Round 3: Ch 1, sc in first st and each st around, join with sl st to first sc.
• Work Even Round 4: Ch 1, dc in same st and each st around, join with sl st to first dc.
• Work Even Round 5: Repeat Work Even Round 3.
• Repeat Work Even Rounds 1-5 until hat measures approximately 3.5” (5”, 6.75”, 7.5”, 8.5”)/9 cm (13 cm, 17 cm, 19 cm, 21.5 cm) or desired height.

• Brim Round 2: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts] around, join with sl to to first sc. (32 sts)
• Brim Round 3: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 sc in next st, scBL in next 7 sts] around, join with sl to to first sc. (36 sts)
• Brim Round 3: Repeat Work Even Round 3.Fasten off and continue to Finishing.

Rolled Brim – Newborn

• Brim Round 1: Ch 1, starting in same st [2 scBL in next st, scBL in next 8 sts] around, join with sl to to first sc. (40 sts)

Finishing
