Milagros Beanie
Chunky Crochet Hat Pattern by Underground Crafter



This chunky crochet hat pattern is just a little slouchy. It works up quickly in a bulky yarn and uses a slightly open stitch combination, making it ideal for mild winters.
Finished Size
- Adult Medium: 21” (53.5 cm) hat circumference x 8” (20.5 cm) height (shown on a mannequin with 22.5” (57 cm) head circumference).
Materials
- KnitPal Merino Moments yarn (40% Merino wool/10% silk/30% modal/20% cotton, 3.5 oz/100 g, 114 yd/104 m) – 1 skein in Pink Blush (CA) and 2 skeins in Sapphire Blue (CB), or approximately 75 yd (68.5 m) in CA and 140 yd (128 m) in CB in any wool blend, bulky weight yarn.
- US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- 7 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- 10 sts = 2.5” (6 cm) across in pattern for Hat Band with smaller hook. For best fit, always check your gauge.
- 12 sts = 4” (10 cm) across in pattern for Work Even with larger hook. For best fit, always check your gauge.

- hdc – half double crochet
- hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – [Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this decrease is available below.

Pattern Notes
- Ch 1 at start of Rows and Rounds DOES NOT count as a stitch.
- There are several ways to crochet into chain spaces. This pattern uses the first method shown in the video below.

Pattern Instructions
Beanie
Hat Band
- With smaller hook and CA, ch 11.
- Row 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, [hdc in next ch, sl st in next ch] across. (10 sts)
- Row 2: Turn, ch 1, starting in first st [hdcBL in next st, slst3L in next st] across.
- Repeat Row 2 until piece measures approximately 21” (53.5 cm) long.
- Do not fasten off.
- Fold Hat Band so that short edges are together, being careful not to twist. Ch 1, join with sl st seam (see video below) across short edge. Do not fasten off.

Work Even
- Set Up Rnd: Working along long edge, ch 1, evenly work 76 sc around the edge (see video below), join with sl st to first sc. – 76 sts

- Rnd 1: Switch to larger hook, ch 1, starting in first st [sc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st] around, join with sl st to first sc.
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, [pf in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, skip 1 st] around to last ch-1 sp, pf in next ch-1 sp, join with sl st to first sc.
- Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, [ch 1, skip next pf, sc in ch-1 sp] aroundto last st, ch 1, skip next pf, join with sl st to first sc..
- Rep Rnds 2-3 until hat measures approximately 7.5” (19 cm) height.
- Do not fasten off.
Decrease to Crown
- Decrease Rnd 1: Ch 1, skip first st, *[(hdc2tog in next 2 ch-1 sp, skipping sc between),** ch 1, skip 1 st] around to last 2 ch-1 sp; rep from * to ** once, join with sl st to first hdc2tog. (38 sts)
- Decrease Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, [skip next st, sc in ch-1 sp] around to last st, skip next st. (19 sts)
- Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 18”/45.5 cm long) for cinching.
Finishing
- With yarn needle, cinch hat crown closed (see Pattern Notes).
- With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of hat.
