Crochet Striped Hat Pattern by Underground Crafter



This crochet striped hat pattern is an easy peasy, meditative project. Available in five sizes, this pattern is gender-neutral and is designed to coordinate with the Leddy (Infinity) Scarf.
Finished Size
- Preemie (Infant, Toddler/Child, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Large). Photographed sample is size Teen/Adult Small shown on a mannequin with 22.5” (57 cm) head circumference.
- Preemie: 11” (28 cm) hat circumference x 5” (13 cm) height.
- Infant: 14.25” (36 cm) hat circumference x 5.25” (13.5 cm) height.
- Toddler/Child: 17.25” (44 cm) hat circumference x 6.25” (16 cm) height.
- Teen/Adult Small: 20.5” (52 cm) hat circumference x 8.5” (21.5 cm) height.
- Adult Large: 23.5” (59.5 cm) hat circumference x 9.25” (23.5 cm) height.
Materials
- Cascade Yarns Pacific yarn (available from Jimmy Beans | LoveCrafts) (60% acrylic/40% superwash Merino wool, 3.5 oz/100 g/213 yd/195 m) – 1 skein each in 01 Cream (CA), 117 Semolina (CB), and 179 Burnt Cinnamon (CC), or approximately 25 yd (30 yd, 45 yd, 70 yd, 85 yd)/23m (27.5 m, 41 m, 64 m, 77.5 m) in each in 3 colors in any medium weight yarn.
- US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Through Rnd 4 in pattern = 4.5” (11.5 cm) diameter. For best results, always check your gauge.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- BL – back loop only – Rich Textures Crochet has a helpful video demonstrating how to identify the back loop in crochet here.
- CA – Color A
- CB – Color B
- CC – Color C
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- Rnd(s) – Round(s)
- sc – single crochet
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – [Insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Yarn Obsession has a helpful video tutorial for this stitch here.
- sl st – slip stitch
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- yo – yarn over
- [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
Pattern Notes
- Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.
- Work stripe pattern as one round each in CC, CB, CA throughout, dropping unworked yarns inside of hat and picking up as needed, being careful not to pull next yarn tightly and pucker.

Pattern Instructions
Striped Hat (All Sizes)
Increase for Crown
- With CC, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, change to next color in stripe sequence (see Pattern Notes) with sl st to first dc. (12 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 dc in first st and each st around, change to next color in stripe sequence with sl st to first dc. (24 sts)
- Rnd 3: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] around, change to next color in stripe sequence with sl st to first dc. (36 sts)
- Rnd 4: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, change to next color in stripe sequence with sl st to first dc. (48 sts) PREEMIE SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
- Rnd 5: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts] around, change to next color in stripe sequence with sl st to first dc. (60 sts) INFANT SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
- Rnd 6: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts] around, change to next color in stripe sequence with sl st to first dc. (72 sts) TODDLER/CHILD SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
- Rnd 7: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts] around, change to next color in stripe sequence with sl st to first dc. (84 sts) TEEN/ADULT SMALL SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
- Rnd 8: Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 6 sts] around, change to next color in stripe sequence with sl st to first dc. (96 sts) ADULT LARGE SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
Work Even (All Sizes)
- Work Even Rnd 1: Ch 1, dc in first st and each st around, change to next color in stripe sequence with sl st to first dc.
- Rep Work Even Rnd 1 until hat height measures approximately 4.5” (4.75”, 5.75”, 8”, 8.75”)/11.5 cm (12 cm, 14.5 cm, 20.5 cm, 22 cm) height. Do not fasten off.
Decrease Round
- Decrease Rnd 1: Ch 1, starting in first st [sc2tog, sc in next 2 (3, 4, 5, 6) sts] around, change to next color in stripe sequence with sl st to first st. – 36 (48, 60, 72, 84) sts
- Next Rnd: Ch 1, scBL in first st and each st around, change to next color in stripe sequence with sl st to first sc.
- Rep Next Rnd until hat height measures approximately 5” (5.25”, 6.25”, 8.5”, 9.25”)/13 cm (13.5 cm, 16 cm, 21.5 cm, 23.5 cm) height. Fasten off all yarns.
Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of hat.
