Today, I’m sharing a simple pattern using the popular crossed double crochet stitch (also known as the CDC or X stitch pattern). The CDC Mug Hug is one of several last-minute gift ideas I’ll be sharing on the blog in the coming weeks. The CDC Mug Hug is sized to fit a plastic reusable coffee cup, but I’ve included instructions on how to resize it for a standard paper coffee cup.

A few years back, I shared some free patterns on Instagram to grow my audience there. These quickly became difficult to find and sort of got lost in the feed and some folks also found those patterns hard to read in app. Now, I’m slowly working on bringing those patterns to the Underground Crafter blog, including the CDC Mug Hug. These are great gifts for the coffee lovers on your handmade holiday list, and if you’d like to pair it with a reusable cup, I’ve included links to buy those.

I love the crossed double crochet stitch. It’s one of my favorite stitch patterns, but if you’re new to it, I’ve included a video tutorial. You can crochet these mug hugs pretty quickly, and make 3-4 mug hugs with each skein of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn. Most folks love coffee, or tea, or hot chocolate, so these are also great “gift closet” gifts, to keep “in stock” at home for co-workers, neighbors, and teachers, too. (I’ve also been known to stuff the cups with chocolate kisses or candies before gifting.)
If you make your own CDC Mug Hug, I’d love to see it! Share your progress and questions by tagging me on Bluesky as @UndergroundCrafter, Facebook as @UndergroundCrafter, or on Instagram as @ucrafter. You can also share a picture in the Underground Crafters Facebook group.
