Book Review: The Granny Square Kit

Margaret Hubert’s The Granny Square Kit is a boxed kit including a 32-page booklet, a crochet hook, a yarn needle, and 5 colors of yarn.

Inside the booklet, you’ll find Crochet Basics which includes information about hooks and a chart of metric to US hook sizes; general techniques including written instructions with progress photos of the slip knot, basic crochet stitches (chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, double triple crochet), working through the back loop, decreases (single crochet 2 stitches together and double crochet 2 stitches together), front post double crochet, reverse single crochet, and a shell stitch; a section on reading pattern abbreviations, converting from US to UK abbreviations, and international stitch symbols along with a glossary of abbreviations and symbols; tips for checking and getting gauge; granny square techniques including written instructions with progress photos for starting with a chain ring, slip knot, or adjustable loop (magic ring); the invisible join; picking up stitches for borders; and seaming with the whipstitch, weave, single crochet, or chain join. Additionally, there are written instructions for the traditional granny square with detailed progress photos.

The booklet moves on to 12 granny square patterns. Each includes a flat photograph of the square over a white background, the pattern skill level, and instructions written with US pattern abbreviations and international stitch symbols. There are 2 beginner, 2 easy, 7 intermediate, and 1 experienced patterns. The Granny Square Kit is a fun gift idea for new crocheters including 13 granny square patterns (including the traditional one) and helpful crochet tips. The patterns and tips are collected from larger reference books by Margaret Hubert into a portable and simple booklet which doesn’t overwhelm. Tight crocheters like me may find that the hook size is smaller than ideal for the included yarn. Don’t forget to stop by the main Granny Square Month blog post by July 6, 2025 to enter the giveaway for your chance to win one of two copies of The Granny Square Kit.
