Granny Square Month Is Back!

If you’ve been an Underground Crafter reader for a long time, you might remember Granny Square Month from 2017 and 2018. I’m thrilled to bring it back for a third edition this year. Throughout June, I’ll be sharing a daily post about granny squares (broadly defined), including free crochet patterns, granny square book reviews, giveaways, tips, tutorials, and roundups. There will be loads of granny square fun to keep you inspired, along with your chance to win one of eight great prizes!

What Is Granny Square Month and How Does the Third Edition Work?

I’ve previously noted that the traditional granny square pattern originated in the 1890s in a printed leaflet by Weldon and Company of London. This is the only pattern that is “supposed to be” called a granny square… but with granny squares (as well as other things), I prefer to be more inclusive!

For our 30-day celebration of Granny Square Month, I’m highlighting crocheted motifs in any shape and using any stitch pattern, granny stitch patterns, and granny stripe patterns. Every day in June 2025, I’ll be sharing a new post featuring grannies, including free crochet patterns, roundups, designer features, book reviews, giveaways, and more!
