Amalia Granny Square Crochet Pattern

Crochet Granny Square Pattern by Underground Crafter

Amalia is a 12″ (30.5 cm) textured granny square. It was designed for the 2025 Moogly Crochet Along.

Finished Size

  • 12” (30.5 cm) square.

Materials

  • Caron One Pound yarn (available online at Herschnerrs | Mary MaximAmazon) (100% acrylic, 16 oz/454 g/812 yd/742 m) – 1 skein each in 02005 Sun Yellow (CA), 10517 Rose (CB), and 10620 Grass Green, or approximately 40 yd (36.5 m) in CA, 66 yd (60.5 m) in CB, and 90 yd (82.5 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn
  • US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.
    • I used the MECHEER crochet hook set including yarn needles, stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape, and case for my version.

Gauge

  • Motif = 12” (30.5 cm) square in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • BL – back loop only – Moogly has a helpful tutorial for identifying the back loop here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • CC – Color C
  • CD – Color D
  • ch – chain
  • cl – 2-dc cluster – [Yo, insert hook in same st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • dc – double crochet
  • FPdc – front post double crochet – Yo, insert hook from front around back to front of st in previous round, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • hdc – half double crochet
  • pf – 5-repeat puff – [Yo, insert hook into st, yo and draw up a loop] 5 times in same st, yo and draw through all 11 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

  • RS – right (front) side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • WS – wrong (back) side
  • yo – yarn over
  • * Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.
  • () Work instructions between parentheses into same stitch or space.

Pattern Notes

  • Ch 1 at start and sl st at end of Rounds DO NOT count as stitches.
  • There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. In this pattern, I use the first method shown in the video below.

Pattern Instructions

Motif

  • With CA, ch 4, skip first 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
  • Round 1: (WS) Ch 1, 12 cl in ring, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (12 sts)
  • Round 2: Join CB on RS with sl st to any st, ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 2, sc in next st] around, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc. (12 sts + 12 ch-1 sp)
  • Round 3: (RS) Sl st to ch-2 sp, starting in same sp [(pf, ch 1, pf) in next ch-2 sp, skip sc] around, join with sl st to first pf. (24 sts + 12 ch-1 sp)
  • Round 4: (RS) Ch 1, sc in same pf and in each pf and ch-1 sp around, join with sl st, fasten off CB. (36 sts)
  • Round 5: Join CA on RS with slstBL to any st, ch 1, starting in same st [scBL in next st, ch 1, scBL in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st] around, join CC with sl st to first sc, fasten off CA. (24 sts + 24 ch-1 sp)
  • Round 6: Join CC on RS with sl st to any sc, ch 1, starting in same st [2 sc in next st, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next st,  hdcBL in skipped st on Round 4] around, join with sl st to first sc. (60 sts)
  • Round 7: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (72 sts)
  • Round 8: (RS) Ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 7 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first st, ch 2, join with sl st, fasten off CC. (21 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 9: Join CA on RS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, dc in same sp, *skip 1 st, [(sc, hdc, dc) in next st, skip 2 sts] across to last 2 sts on side, (sc, hdc, dc) in next st, skip 1 st,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (23/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 10: Join CB on RS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *skip 3 sts, [(sc, hdc, dc) in next dc, skip 2 sts] across to last st on side, skip 1 st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CB. (25/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 11: Join CC on RS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *dc in next 25 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CC. (29 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 12: Join CA on RS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same sp, *[ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st] across side to last st, ch 1, skip 1 st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, join with sl st to first dc, fasten off CA. (18 dc + 15 ch-1 sp/33 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 13: Join CB on WS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *sc in next 2 sts, [tr in skipped st on Round 11, sc in next st] across side to last st, sc in next st,** (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in first ch-2 sp, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CB. (35 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Round 14: Join CC on RS with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, dc in same sp, *sc in next 3 sts, [FPdc around tr, dc in next st] across side to last 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts,** (ch 3, dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, ch 3, join with sl st to first dc. (36 sts/side + 4 ch-3 sp)
  • Round 15: (RS) Ch 1, starting in same st [sc in each st across side, sc in ch-3 sp, ch 2] 4 times, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off CC. (37 sts/side + 4 ch-2 sp)
