I’m sharing a pattern for the Camila Granny Square Hat today. I made my version with two muted colors, but you could also make a scrappy version, or use high contrast colors!

My version has a bit of slouch to it, but you could shorten the Work Even section if you’d prefer a more “beanie-esque” fit.

Camila Granny Square Hat
Crochet Granny Square Hat Pattern by Underground Crafter



This granny square hat has a slouchy fit. My version is made with two colors but it would also look great scrappy! This pattern was originally published in 3 clues as the twentieth Weekend Mystery Crochet Along with Underground Crafter.
Finished Size
- Teen/Adult Small: 19.5″ (49.5 cm) hat circumference x 9.5″ (24 cm) hat height.
Materials
- Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz/100 g, 170 yd/156 m) – 1 skein in 405G Silver Heather (CA) and 1 skein in 178AC Sea Glass (CB), or approximately 170 yd (156 m) in CA and 55 yd (50.5 m) in CB in any medium weight yarn.
- KnitPro Waves 2.0 (available online at LoveCrafts | Amazon) US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Granny Square = 3.25″ (8.5 cm) square in pattern. For best fit, always check your gauge.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful video tutorial demonstrating how to identify the back loop in crochet here.
- CA – Color A
- CB – Color B
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- dc2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – [Yo, insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. A video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

- RS – right (front) sid
- sc – single crochet

Pattern Instructions
Granny Square (Make 3 each in CA and CB)

- Ch 4, skip 3 ch, sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, [3 dc in ring, ch 2] 3 times, 3 dc in ring, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to top of first dc. (3 sts on each side + 4 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, *[ch 1, skip 3 sts,** (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, repeat from * to ** once, 3 dc in first ch-2 sp, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to top of first dc. – 7 sts (6 dc + 1 ch-1 sp) on each side + 4 ch-2 sp
- Rnd 3: Ch 1, 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, *[ch 1, skip 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp] across to corner ch-2 sp,** (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, repeat from * to ** once, 3 dc in first ch-2 sp, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to top of first dc. – 11 sts (9 dc + 2 ch-1 sp) on each side + 4 ch-2 sp
- Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 18″/46 cm long) for seaming.
- Arrange your squares so that the colors alternate. Join first square to next square with slip stitch seam (see Pattern Notes) on back starting in ch-2 sp and working across side to next ch-2 sp. Continue until all 6 squares are joined into a row. Join the first and last square together. With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on wrong side.

Work Even
- Rnd 1: Join CA on right side with sl st to any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, dc in ch-2 sp, *[dcBL in next 3 sts, dc in next ch-1 sp] twice, dcBL in next 3 sts, dc in next ch-2 sp, dc2tog into same ch-2 sp and next ch-2 sp,** dc in second ch-2 sp; repeat from * across, ending last repeat at **, join with sl st to first dc. (84 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, dc in same st and each st around, join with sl st to first dc.
- Repeat Rnd 2 until piece measures 6″ (15 cm) from start. Do not fasten off.

Decrease to Crown
- Decrease Rnd 1: Ch 1, starting in same st [dc2tog, dc in next 5 sts] around, join with sl st. (72 sts)
- Decrease Rnd 2: Ch 1, starting in same st [dc2tog, dc in next 4 sts] around, join with sl st. (60 sts)
- Decrease Rnd 3: Ch 1, starting in same st [dc2tog, dc in next 3 sts] around, join with sl st. (48 sts)
- Decrease Rnd 4: Ch 1, starting in same st [dc2tog, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st. (36 sts)
- Decrease Rnd 5: Ch 1, starting in same st [dc2tog, dc in next st] around, join with sl st. (24 sts)
- Decrease Rnd 6: Ch 1, starting in same st dc2tog around, join with sl st. (12 sts)
- Decrease Rnd 7: Repeat Decrease Rnd 6 once. (6 sts)
- Fasten off CA with long yarn tail (approximately 12″/30.5 cm long) for seaming.
- Thread yarn needle with CA from long yarn tail. Seam final round closed with whipstitch (see Pattern Notes).

Hat Band
- Rnd 1: Join CB on right side with sl st to the ch-2 sp below the seam for your previous join, ch 1, sc in ch-2 sp, *[scBL in next 3 sts, sc in next ch-1 sp] twice, scBL in next 3 sts, sc in next ch-2 sp, sc2tog into same ch-2 sp and next ch-2 sp,** sc in second ch-2 sp; repeat from * across, ending last repeat at **, join with sl st to first sc. (84 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, scBL in same st and each st around, join with sl st to first sc.
- If necessary, repeat Rnd 2 until hat measures 9.5″ (24 cm) from crown. Fasten off CB.
Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in any remaining yarn tails on inside of hat.
