The fifth pattern in the Two of a Kind Hat & Scarf Knit Along is the Festival knit slouch hat pattern. The Festival Slouch combines an easy lace stitch pattern to allow air flow with a soft cotton and linen blend yarn to keep your head cooler in warmer weather. Holding two strands of yarn in contrasting colors together makes a vibrant fabric that stands out in the crowd.

Scroll down for Festival, a knit slouch hat pattern. I was very inspired by the yarn for this project, Cascade Yarns Hampton. It’s a soft, light (#3/DK/double knitting) weight cotton and linen blend yarn. It’s just perfect for summer! As I was thinking about hats for summer, I thought about going to the summer festivals and events. Often, there are bigger crowds and its easy to get separated from the folks you arrived with as you wait on different lines for food, drinks, the bathroom, etc. That’s why I decided to make this entire pattern holding two strands of yarn held together.

These vibrant colors (18 Chrysanthemum and 23 Tile Blue) when put together make a fun and funky hat that your friends will be able to spot in the crowd! Now, you’ll be stylish and easy to find. What could be more fun?

Pattern Notes
- You will knit with 1 strand of each yarn (2 strands of yarn total) held together throughout this project. Choose yarn in contrasting colors for this pattern so it is easier to see that you have both strands on your needles as you work (and to make a more vibrant, tweedy hat). If you’re new to knitting with 2 strands of yarn held together, you may find this video tutorial from Elizabeth Smith Knits helpful.
- To work your gauge swatch for the Work Even pattern, you can:
- Knit your swatch in the round: Cast on 20 sts. Follow the pattern for Work Even below and knit your swatch in the round until swatch measures approximately 5.5″ (14 cm) in height. (If you’re new to swatching in the round, WEBS has a helpful video tutorial here.)
- Knit your swatch flat (though your gauge may be slightly different because you will be purling instead of knitting in some parts). Cast on 20 sts. Row 1: Knit. Row 2: Purl. Row 3: Knit. Row 4: P1, [yo, p2tog] to last st, p1. Rows 5-7: Repeat Rows 1-3 once. Row 8: P1, [p2tog, yo] to last st, p1. Repeat Rows 1-8 until swatch measures approximately 5.5″ (14 cm) in height.
- VeryPink Knits has a helpful video tutorial for binding off in pattern here.
Pattern Instructions
Hat Band
- With smaller needles and holding 1 strand of each yarn together throughout, cast on 11 sts using your preferred method.
- Row 1: (Right Side) K to last st, p1.
- Row 2: Sl 1, [k4, p1] twice.
- Row 3: Sl 1, k to last st, p1.
- Row 4: Repeat Row 2 once.
- Repeat Rows 3-4 until Hat Band measures approximately 21″ (53.5 cm) long, or desired hat circumference, ending after a repeat of Row 4. Bind off in pattern (see Pattern Notes) for Row 3.

- Fasten off yarns with long tails (approximately 18″/45.5 cm) for seaming.
- Fold over Hat Band so that short ends are together and Wrong Sides are together, making sure not to twist. Thread yarn needle with long yarn tails from end of Hat Band and seam short edges together with mattress stitch (see video below).
- If you can’t see the video above demonstrating the mattress stitch seam, click HERE to watch it on YouTube.
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails from start and end of Hat Band on Wrong Side.
Pick Up Stitches
- With Right Side facing out, using larger needles, and holding 1 strand of each yarn together throughout, evenly pick up 76 sts (see video below) along circumference of Hat Band, pm and move marker each Rnd to mark position.
- If you can’t see the video above demonstrating how to pick up stitches, click HERE to watch it on YouTube.
Work Even
- Continue with larger needles and holding 1 strand of each yarn together.
- Rnd 1: K around. (76 sts)
- Rnd 2: K around.
- Rnd 3: [Yo, k2tog] around.

- Fasten off yarns with long tails (approximately 36″/91.5 cm) for finishing.
Finishing
- To close crown (see video below), thread yarn needle with long strands of yarn from end of Work Even section. With yarn needle, draw yarn tails through remaining sts, remove sts from needles. Pull yarn tight and secure to close crown.
- If you can’t see the video above demonstrating how to cinch the crown of a bottom-up knit hat closed, click HERE to watch it on YouTube.
- With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of Hat.
