Book Review: Over 120 Crochet Flowers & Blocks

Over 120 Crochet Flowers & Blocks: Fabulous Motifs and Flowers is a crochet pattern collection from Tuva Publishing with 126 patterns for flowers, floral motifs, and motifs. (I reviewed the PDF version of this book and therefore, do not comment on binding in my review.) The book opens with an Introduction noting the patterns are written using US crochet terms with international stitch symbol charts and the samples appear in DMC Natura Just Cotton, DMC Natura Medium, or DMC Natura XL cotton yarns. The book then moves onto a visual table of contents (called Gallery of Flowers and Gallery of Blocks) which includes a flat lay photo of each flower or motif against a white background and including the page number where you can find the pattern.
The first pattern section is Flowers: 66 Flowers and Leaves. In this section, you’ll find the leaf and flower patterns which include appliques, motifs in floral shapes, and 3D flowers (with or without stems). Each pattern includes photos of the flower or leaf against a white background, written instructions with US pattern abbreviations, and an international stitch symbol chart. Below each chart you will find a key to the symbols used. The majority of these patterns include multiple versions made in different colors and yarn weights, so you can see two to four samples of the flower. Some of the flowers are realistic representations while others are more abstract. The next pattern section is Blocks: 50 Blocks Motifs. In this section, you’ll find motifs in more standard shapes, including 28 squares (or 4-sided with equal sides motifs), 10 hexagons (or 6-sided with equal sides motifs), 10 triangles, and 12 others shapes including octagons and star shaped motifs. As with the previous section, each pattern includes a flat lay photo of the motif against a white background, a written pattern using US crochet abbreviations and international stitch symbols, and a key to symbols below each chart.
After the patterns, the Stitch Guide & Abbreviations section provides written and illustrated instructions for the magic ring and slip knot, basic crochet stitches (slip stitch, chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet), special stitches (sc2tog decrease, puff stitches, shells, clusters, bobbles, popcorns, picot stitch), and working into the front and back loop; written instructions for the double treble crochet and joining with single crochet; and written and photographed instructions for crocheting around a wire stem for the 3D flowers.
Over 120 Crochet Flowers & Blocks: Fabulous Motifs and Flowers is different from many other granny squares and blocks books. The motifs are relatively small, from two to seven rounds, and therefore perfect for use as appliques, insertions, or “scrumbles” for freeform crochet. The large collection of floral patterns are great for embellishments or freestanding floral bouquets. If you are a crocheter with beginner level or more advanced skills who loves experimenting with different shapes, adorning your projects with embellishments, and crocheting flowers, this may be the book for you! Read on for an excerpted lacy granny square pattern from the book.
