I’m sharing the first pattern in the 7th Annual Halloween Crochet Along: a silly Frankenstein’s monster beanie in four sizes!

Crochet Frankenstein Beanie Pattern


This silly crochet Frankenstein’s Monster beanie pattern is available in four sizes. This is the first pattern in the seventh annual Halloween Crochet Along.
Finished Sizes
- Newborn-3 Months (Toddler, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Large). Photographed sample is Teen/Adult Small shown on a mannequin with 22.5” (57 cm) head circumference.
- Newborn-3 Months: 13.5” (34.5 cm) circumference x 5.25” (13.5 cm) length.
- Toddler: 16.5” (42 cm) circumference x 7” (18 cm) length.
- Teen/Adult Small: 19.75” (50 cm) circumference x 8.5” (21.5 cm) length.
- Adult Large: 23” (58.5 cm) circumference x 9.25” (23.5 cm) length.
Materials
- Herrschners Worsted 3 yarn (100% acrylic, 3 oz/85 g, 183 yd/168 m) – 1 skein each in Black (CA), Lime (CB), and White (CC), or approximately 30 yd (45 yd, 65 yd, 85 yd)/27.5 m (41 m, 59.5 m, 78 m) in CA, 40 yd (65 yd, 95 yd, 120 yd)/36.5 m (59.5 m, 87 m, 110 m) in CB, and 20 yd (18.5 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
- US Size 7/4.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Stitch marker.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Through Rnd 4 in pattern = 4.25” (11 cm) diameter. For best fit, always check your gauge.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful video tutorial demonstrating how to identify the back loop in crochet here.
- bob – 5-repeat bobble – [Yo, insert hook into st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops] 5 times in the same st, yo and draw through all 6 loops on hook. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

Hat
Frankenstein’s Hair – All Sizes
- With CA, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: (RS) Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc. (12 sts)
- Rnd 2: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in each st] around, join with sl st to first dc. (24 sts)
- Rnd 3: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] around, join with sl st to first dc. (36 sts)
- Rnd 4: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts) NEWBORN-3 MONTHS SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
- Rnd 5: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (60 sts) TODDLER SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
- Rnd 6: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (72 sts) TEEN/ADULT SMALL SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
- Rnd 7: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st [2 dc in next st, dc in next 5 sts] around, join with sl st to first dc. (84 sts) ADULT LARGE SIZE ONLY: Continue on to Work Even.
Work Even – Newborn-3 Months Size Only
- Work Even Rnd 1: (RS) Ch 1, dc in same st and each st around, join with sl st to first dc. (48 sts)
- Work Even Rnd 2: (RS) Ch 1, starting in first st, [scFL in next st, hdcFL in next st, dcFL in next st, ch 3] around, join CB with slstBL to first sc, fasten off CA.
- Work Even Rnd 3: (RS) Ch 1, dcBL in first st and in each st around, join with sl st to first dc.
- Rep Work Even Rnd 1 until hat measures approximately 3.75″ (9.5 cm) from crown.

- Final Rnd: (RS) Ch 1, scBL in first st and each st around, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off CB.

Eyes – Newborn-3 Months and Toddler Sizes (Make 2)
- With CA, start with magic adjustable ring (see Pattern Notes).
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, tighten magic ring to close, join CC with sl st to first sc to join, fasten off CA. (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st and next 4 sts, skip next st. (10 sts)
- Fasten off CC with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm) for seaming.
- CONTINUE ON TO EMBELLISHING AND FINISHING.
Eyes – Teen/Adult and Adult Large Sizes (Make 2)
- With CA, start with magic adjustable ring (see Pattern Notes).
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, tighten magic ring to close, join CC with sl st to first sc to join, fasten off CA. (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st and next 4 sts, skip next st. (10 sts)
- Rnd 3: Turn, ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st. (13 sts)
- Fasten off CC with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm) for seaming.
- CONTINUE ON TO EMBELLISHING AND FINISHING.
Embellishing and Finishing – All Sizes
- With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails from start of Eye and start of CC on Eye onto WS.
- Position the Eyes below the Hair and between the bobble “bolts.”

- Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail in CC. With yarn needle, join first Eye around CC edges by sewing or with whipstitch (see Pattern Notes). Weave in yarn tail on inside of hat. Thread yarn needle with CA from end of first Rnd. With yarn needle, join first Eye around CA edges by sewing or with whipstitch. Weave in yarn tail on inside of hat. Repeat for second Eye.

- Thread yarn needle with 12” (30.5 cm) length of CC. Using embroidery backstitch (see Pattern Notes), form Mouth. If desired, create scars or other markings. Weave in ends on inside of hat.
