I’ve mentioned before that I love crochet hexagons. Recently, I’ve had bags on my mind and so I started toying with the idea of making a crochet child’s purse from hexagons, and that’s how the Flower Hexagon Child’s Purse was born. It’s small enough that if your little one gets tired it can fit into YOUR purse or bag, but it’s big enough to carry along art supplies, snacks, or a tiny collectible.
This project is so simple that I had to add something to spruce it up. The pop of color for the flower really added something! You can make your version in two colors like me, or scrap it up with different yarn colors for the front and back hexagons, the flower, and the strap.

Crochet Child’s Purse Pattern by Underground Crafter
The Flower Hexagon Child’s Purse is the first of 31 free crochet and knitting patterns for holiday gift ideas in the 8th Annual Christmas in July Make Along with Underground Crafter. This easy crochet child’s purse is made from two hexagons. It is a great way to use up yarns scraps or make a last-minute gift for a special kiddo in your life. Gift it by itself or pair it with a set of crayons, a treat like hot cocoa mix, or a surprise like a LEGO bag or trading cards!
Finished Size
- Child’s Purse: 6.5″ (16.5 cm) width x 6.5″ (16.5 cm) height (not including handle).
Materials
- Big Twist Value yarn (100% acrylic, 6 oz/170 g, 380 yd/347 m) – 1 skein each in Varsity Navy Blue (MC) and Varsity Gold (CC), or approximately 70 yd (64 m) in MC and 20 yd (18.5 m) in CC in any medium weight yarn.
- US Size I-9/5.5mm mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- Flower Hexagon = 5.5” (14 cm) across flat edges in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern.

Pattern Notes
- Ch 1 at start and sl st join at end of Rnds DO NOT count as stitches.
- There are many ways to crochet into chain spaces. Both hexagons use the first method and the Bag Strap uses the second method shown in the video below.

Pattern Instructions
Flower Hexagon
- With CC, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc. (12 sts)
- Rnd 2: [Ch 3, skip next st, sc in next st] around, ending with sc into first st. (6 ch-3 sp + 6 sc)
- Rnd 3: Starting in first ch-3 sp [(sc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, sc) in ch-3 sp, skip sc] around, join with sl st to first sc. (6 petals)
- Rnd 4: Working behind petals from previous Rnd, [ch 5, sc in skipped sc on Rnd 2 between petals] around. (6 ch-5 sp + 6 sc)
- Rnd 5: Starting in first ch-5 sp [(sc, ch 3, 5 dc, ch 3, sc) in ch-3 sp, skip sc] around, join with sl st to first sc. (6 petals)
- Rnd 6: Working behind petals from previous Rnd, [ch 4, sc in skipped sc on Rnd 4 between petals] around, fasten off CC. (6 ch-4 sp + 6 sc)
- Rnd 7: Join MC with sl st to any ch-4 sp, ch 1, starting in same sp *8 dc in ch-4 sp,** ch 2; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (8 sts/side + 6 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 8: Ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *skip 2 sts, dc in next 4 sts, skip 2 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (8 sts/side + 6 ch-2 sp)

Basic Hexagon
- With MC, ch 4, skip 3 ch, join with sl st to next ch to form ring.
- Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, join with sl st to first dc. (12 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, starting in first st *2 dc in next 2 sts,** ch 2; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (4 sts/side + 6 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 3: Ch 1, dc in first ch-2 sp, *dc in next 4 sts,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (6 sts/side + 6 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 4: Ch 1, dc in first ch-2 sp, *dc in next 6 sts,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc. (8 sts/side + 6 ch-2 sp)
- Rnd 5: Ch 1, dc in same ch-2 sp, *dc in next 8 sts,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, join with sc (counts as second ch in ch-2 sp) to first dc, do not fasten off. (10 sts/side + 6 ch-2 sp)
Join Hexagons
- Position hexagons with wrong sides together with sides and spaces aligned and Basic Hexagon facing you. Join with single crochet seam (see Pattern Notes) working through both hexagons as follows: ch 1, sc in first ch-2 sp, [sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, sc in next 10 sts, sc in next ch-2 sp (joining 4 sides). Skip remaining 2 sides and spaces, do not fasten off.
Edging
- Without joining, begin working along remaining sides on Basic Hexagon. *Sc in ch-2 sp, sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in next 10 sts, sc in ch-2 sp;** do not fasten off.
- Turn to work along remaining sides on Flower Hexagon, repeat from * to ** as for Edging for Basic Hexagon, do not fasten off.
Bag Strap
- Ch 30, join with sl st to sc at ch-2 sp on opposite end of Flower Hexagon edging. Ch 30, join with sl st to sc at ch-2 sp at opposite end of Basic Hexagon edging.
- Ch 1, join straps with single crochet seam (see Pattern Notes) working through the front loop of each chain on both straps (30 sc). Join with sl st to next st on purse. Fasten off MC.
Finishing
- With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of purse.
