Natalia Knit Cowl Pattern

The Natalia Cowl is the tenth pattern in the 8th Annual Christmas in July Make Along. This knit cowl pattern works up quickly in two colors of plush and fleecy bulky weight polyester yarn. It’s so soft and cushy, the recipient will love wearing it!

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a rather slow knitter. As much as I’d like to gift people gorgeous knit blankets and long luxurious scarves, I would spend months to get those type of gifts done. I used two different colors in Herrschners Cheerful Fleece yarn. You could get at least 3 cowls out of these skeins, but probably closer to four (if you are a “production knitter” for the holidays!). Or, there’s plenty left for another project.

    Knit Cowl Pattern by Underground Crafter

    The Natalia Cowl is the tenth of 31 free crochet and knitting patterns for holiday gift ideas in the 8th Annual Christmas in July Make Along with Underground Crafter. This knit cowl pattern works up quickly in two colors of plush and fleecy bulky weight polyester yarn.

    Finished Size

    • Teen/Adult: 6” (15 cm) wide x 24” (61 cm) circumference.

    Materials

    • Herrschners Cheerful Fleece yarn (100% polyester, 10.5 oz/300 g, 262 yd/240 m) – 1 skein each in Ruby (CA) and Polar (CB), or approximately 70 yd (64 m) in each of 2 colors in any bulky weight, polyester yarn.
    • US Size 13/9 mm knitting needles, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
    • Yarn needle.

    Gauge

    • 14 sts in pattern = 6” (15 cm) across. Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern.

    Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

    • CA – Color A
    • CB – Color B
    • CO – cast on
    • k – knit
    • kw – knitwise with yarn in back (see Pattern Notes)
    • p – purl
    • pw – purlwise with yarn in back (see Pattern Notes)
    • sl – slip stitch
    • st(s) – stitch(es)
    • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.

    • Carry unworked yarn up in back (on wrong side).

    • To adjust width of cowl, add or subtract repeats of 3 in your cast on.To adjust length of cowl, add or subtract repeats of Rows 2-5.

    Pattern Instructions

    • With CA, CO 14 (or any multiple of 3 sts, + 2).
    • Row 1: (Right Side) With CA, k2, [sl1pw, k2] across to last 3 sts, sl1pw, k2, p1. (14 sts)
    • Row 2: (Wrong Side) With CA, sl1kw, p across.
    • Row 3: (Right Side) With CB, sl1kw, [sl1pw, k2] across to last st, p1.
    • Row 4: (Wrong Side) With CB, sl1kw, p across.
    • Row 5: (Right Side) With CA, sk1kw, k1, [sl1pw, k2] across to last 3 sts, sl1pw, k2, p1.
    • Repeat Rows 2-5 until cowl measures just under 24” (61 cm) or desired length, ending after a rep of Row 3. Fasten off CA.
    • Bind off in pattern for Row 4 (see Pattern Notes).
    • Fasten off CB with long yarn tail (approximately 18”/45.5 cm) for seaming.
    • Optional: Spray block (see Pattern Notes).
    • Fold cowl with wrong sides together. Thread yarn needle with CB from bind off edge. With yarn needle, seam short edges with mattress stitch (see Pattern Notes).
    • With yarn needle, weave in ends on wrong side of cowl.
